Product Description

Album story SoRi I have been thinking a lot about how I can draw upon my studies in Korean traditional shamanistic music to create new and unique music. When I brought these ideas to Tatsu, we began to share ideas of what our cultural, historical and musical backgrounds mean in the United States. AIR generously gave me the great opportunity to combine all my thoughts. Therefore, I bring this album as an examination of the SoRi, or sounds, behind my ideas. All the music you hear from this album is composed and arranged by myself and Tatsu Aoki. The pieces are inspired by traditional Korean folk songs Paranse and pansori Simchungga, and Japanese folk music. The music was recorded using Korean percussive instruments (kwenggwari, taepyungso, buk and janggo), several gongs, an upright bass and the Japanese shamisen and taiko drum. In recording SoRi, we attempted to capture not only the sounds we created but the silent incarnations of spirits around us as well. Working with Tatsu was a significant experience because of his incredible talents and his willingness to always support younger artists like myself. He was the oil that fueled my fire and the windy breeze that gave me sufficient space to breathe and create. This album is, to me, a journey of sound from the heavens to the earth. Human being to not human being that can appear and disappear.
