The second H.P. Lovecraft adaptation by Stuart Gordon FROM BEYOND is pure Lovecraftian science-terror. Out-there scientist Dr. Pretorious (Ted Sorel) and his assistant Dr. Tillinghast (Jeffery Combs) are working towards breaking through earthly perceptions and revealing a new alternate universe. They do this by stimulating the pineal gland of the human brain which enables people to see the strange creatures that inhabit a parallel dimension. Unfortunately these creatures can now see humans as well and they are none too pleased with it. Dr. Pretorious is killed by the floating monstrosities but the police blame his assistant for the murder and lock him up. Only Dr. Katharine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) believes the insane tales of Dr. Tillinghast and it's up to her to shut down the experiment that threatens to unleash the other-dimensional creatures on this universe forever. Great special effects and solid performances by Combs and Crampton complement a near-perfect realization by Gordon of Lovecraft's vividly detailed and chilling vision of scientific possibilities.System Requirements:Running Time: 85 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: R UPC: 027616085504 Manufacturer No: M108550

An Awesome Horror Flick That Isn't More of the Same!
Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) is a scientist assisting Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) with a very bizarre experiment. The pair have built a machine that stimulates the mysterious pineal gland resulting in the ability to see bizarre life forms the human eye cannot. This proves to be extremely dangerous, as one of the creatures devours Pretorius and leaves Crawford to take the rap. In search of answers, the D.A. and the police bring the gorgeous Dr. Katherine McMichaels into the picture. A brilliant young scientist who prefers experimentation to incarceration of patients, Katherine manages to get Crawford released into her custody and she and a pro football player-turned-cop named Bubba Brownlee (Ken Foree) go back to the house where Pretorius died to try and recreate the situation. Naturally, when Dr. McMichaels discovers the machine really works (not to mention arouses the sexual appetites of those exposed to it), she cannot leave it alone, and the bad things start happening all over again.
"From Beyond" is another Lovecraft inspired film from the people who brought you "Re-Animator" (which I also highly recommend). The story is disturbing and fantastic, and the cast, including Re-Animator alumni Jeffrey Combs and (the extremely "my type") Barbara Crampton, and zombie-bashing hero of "Dawn of the Dead" Ken Foree, is flawless. On top of that, great music, impressive pre-CGI effects, and disgusting gore add up to one heck of a good time! The Unrated Director's Cut DVD is excellent, with a great widescreen presentation, a lively and fun commentary from Director Stuart Gordon, Producer Brian Yuzna, and stars Combs and Crampton, great storyboard to film comparisons, a photo montage, interview with the composer, and featurettes on the director and the restored scenes. Yes, this true director's cut has some great scenes in it never included in the feature before due to the ratings system! So, if you're a fan of Lovecraft, horror in general, or any of this cast, or if you'd just like to see a horror film that isn't the same old thing, you definitely need to pick this one up!
If You Loved Dagon or Re-Animator, You'll Want To See This...
The Re-Animator movies may be marginally better but From Beyond is still brilliant. Combs is my favorite actor- the only good thing in at least one bad movie I have that I actually fell asleep in when he was off-screen for a bit.
I just love the way he can deliver the most outrageous lines totally straight-faced with utter belief and sincerity. He is the PERFECT mad scientist. You really BELIEVE this man is just psychologically off enough to do whatever he chooses to.
I never got the motivations for mad scientists in 40s, 50s and 60s movies. Oh yeah, there were the scientific setbacks and the reprimands from peers but you just never really believed that was enough to drive them over the edge.
Maybe the characters Combs played were raised by Ed Gein or something. Whatever the case, you BELIEVE they're walking that tight edge between genius and insanity. You see it in his eyes and it's unmistakable in his posture. The intriguing plot, good special effects and intentionally funny tidbits are all bonuses for me, making this DVD well worth the money. I've already made all my friends with any taste for horror watch Gordon's Dagon. Now they'll just have to watch this- hahaa!
Good for the 80's - but not really kitchy . . .
I would have probably really enjoyed this in the 80's - but now. . . not so much. It's a little outdated - and the effects and acting are somewhat poor. I can't believe people have rated it so high - maybe it's nostalgia.
