Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980 & 2004 Versions, 2-Disc Widescreen Edition)Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980 & 2004 Versions, 2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.18
No sci-fi list is complete without this genre classic. Directed by Irvin Kershner, who went on to helm Robocop 2.
Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope (1977 & 2004 Versions, 2-Disc Widescreen Edition)Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope (1977 & 2004 Versions, 2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.91
Another beautifully written script by Lucas. It's simply a masterwork.
Planet of the Apes - The Legacy Collection (Planet of the Apes [1968] / Beneath the / Escape from the / Conquest of the / Battle for the)Planet of the Apes - The Legacy Collection (Planet of the Apes [1968] / Beneath the / Escape from the / Conquest of the / Battle for the)
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $29.99
A classy film, that combined edgy political satire, with great sci-fi, action and adventure. One of the only sci-fi films that has so many quotable moments.
Ghost in the ShellGhost in the Shell
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.26
This film's richly created world, gets you drunk on its imagery, then blasts you with kinetic action and effects.
Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete First SeasonStar Trek The Original Series - The Complete First Season
Buy used from: $79.56
I chose Star Trek the original series, because it represents a great shift in the attitudes of a nation, as set in the far distant future. It was just plain cool, too.
Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $17.94
Another sci-fi masterwork that gets you punch-drunk off dialogue alone. I actually preferred the version with the Harrison Ford voice-over. I know that's not politically correct to say. However, people need to watch it both ways.
The Andromeda StrainThe Andromeda Strain
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.00
Directed by the great Robert Wise, who also helmed The Day the Earth Stood Still (also on my list), it captures 96 of the most critical hours in man's history. Breathtaking film!
The Day the Earth Stood StillThe Day the Earth Stood Still
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.48
The mark of a great film is, can it be watched 20, 50, 100 years later, and still be relevant, classy and powerful. This film will always be all of those things. Filmmakers today are still mining its elements.
The MatrixThe Matrix
Buy used from: $0.20
Successfully melded action, kung fu, comics, anime and sci-fi. And take all those genres to new levels that audiences can't seem to find since (maybe that's why ticket sales have slumped in the U.S. since).
The TerminatorThe Terminator
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.25
Schwarzenegger's first appearance as Terminator was what I call a "blue collar masterpiece". It made leather jackets, bikers, camouflage and garden apartments, part of the sci-fi dictionary.
Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (Extreme DVD)Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (Extreme DVD)
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $2.23
Not many sequels on this list, but James Cameron is a genius. He doesn't rely on theory and classicism. He relies on his gut. Looking forward to Avatar!
Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.09
A lot of people aren't going to be happy about this. I put a sequel on this list, and I am leaving of the original. The original Alien is one of the greatest films ever made. However for me it doesn't qualify as strictly sci-fi. If anything, it's one of the greatest horror films ever made. The remote cabin is replaced by the remote spaceship.
Forbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)Forbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $16.42
Loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, Forbidden Planet is a cult favorite for me.
2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $15.99
Stanley Kubrick's epic sci-fi masterpiece. It works on so many levels, and will forever.
Firefly - The Complete SeriesFirefly - The Complete Series
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $16.97
Firefly is a great TV series, and if Star Trek's on the list, must be included also.
Frank Herbert's Dune (Sci-Fi TV Miniseries) (Special Edition Director's Cut) (3-Disc DVD Set)Frank Herbert's Dune (Sci-Fi TV Miniseries) (Special Edition Director's Cut) (3-Disc DVD Set)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.79
The original Dune film was good, but I felt the Sci-Fi TV miniseries was much more faithful to the source material, and added many more story-making elements. I wish they produced that for theaters, and had given it an R-rating though.
Battlestar Galactica - Season OneBattlestar Galactica - Season One
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $25.00
Another great TV series in the sci-fi realm. I actually enjoyed the original as a kid, but looking back, I see all the Star Wars-inspired moments and characters and can't get past that.
The Road Warrior [Blu-ray]The Road Warrior [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.95 / Used from: $9.00
This, along with The Matrix, are actually 2 of my favorites in the genre. The film was so real (and turns out, so relevant, with these gas prices). Mel Gibson had a beat-down, but can-do attitude about his life.
Mad Max (Special Edition)Mad Max (Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.63
The original Mad Max looked like the cameramen cobbled together equipment and filmed a home movie. That's the way an apocalyptic film should be done. It brught me right into that space. The bad guys were so well played by Aussie actors Hugh Keays-Byrne, and Tim Burns.
Gattaca [Blu-ray]Gattaca [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $15.29
Another great political message in a film. Wasn't very popular in theaters, but a missed opportunity for those who haven't watched it on the big screen.
The HiddenThe Hidden
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $3.03
Another great adrenalin-pumping sci-fi film, that feel off the radar, and is relegated to cult status. It was simply well done, by filmmakers who really love the genre.
I Am Legend [Blu-ray]I Am Legend [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $22.95 / Used from: $11.99
I thought Will played this role extremely well. Although the don't think it was better than Charleton Heston's Omega Man film, it was handled very well. I am looking forward to seeing Will use his star power to produce more good sci-fi.
Dark City (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]Dark City (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $14.78
Dark City was a very neo-noir movie, that really needs to be viewed more than once, to be truly appreciated.
Minority Report (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)Minority Report (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $0.56
Another neo-noir film, with Tom Cruise on the run for a murder he hasn't yet committed. Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job with the material. Janusz Kaminski is a master Cinematographer.
The Omega Man [Blu-ray]The Omega Man [Blu-ray]
Buy used from: $12.66
Again, politics underlays the action here, and Heston brings his trademark charisma to the screen.
Appleseed (Widescreen) (2004)Appleseed (Widescreen) (2004)
Buy used from: $6.75
The reason there's only a couple Japanese anime movies on this list, is that many of the SCI-FI anime films that I've seen, don't successfully match action and engaging storyline with breathtaking visuals, which they always have. Appleseed does that very well.
Akira (DTS)Akira (DTS)
Buy used from: $14.95
I hope Hollywood doesn't drop the ball on the upcoming live-action version of this anime classic. Akira is one of the best of the genre, and well worthy of this list.
