In Search of Lost Time: Proust 6-pack (Proust Complete)In Search of Lost Time: Proust 6-pack (Proust Complete) by Marcel Proust
Buy new: $47.25 / Used from: $42.75
Nobody surpasses Proust. See my review of this book.
Middlemarch (Penguin Classics)Middlemarch (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $3.99
Eliot's highest achievement. Even if you don't like the period, the characters are so beautifully realized and drawn, they are timeless. Eliot's almost maternalistic insights (she never had children of her own) into her characters' dilemmas and problems are always magnificant and exquisite.
Lord Jim (Penguin Classics)Lord Jim (Penguin Classics) by Joseph Conrad
Buy used from: $0.01
My personal favorite. Conrad was Polish and spoke French fluently, but wrote only (and wonderfully) in English.
The Woman in White Volume IThe Woman in White Volume I by Wilki Collins
Buy used from: $12.00
Collins wrote only two novels, both of which I love. Woman in White is considered to be the first thriller, and The Moonstone is viewed as the first mystery. He was friends with Dickens, whose greatness I acknowledge, but whose work I've never liked.
The Turn of the Screw (Dover Thrift Editions)The Turn of the Screw (Dover Thrift Editions) by Henry James
Buy new: $2.00 / Used from: $0.01
The hair stood up on the back of my neck as I read the last paragraph.
The House of Mirth (Signet Classics)The House of Mirth (Signet Classics) by Edith Wharton
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
Devastatingly sad story illustrating the dangers of feminine rebellion in the early 20th century.
Ethan Frome (Signet Classics)Ethan Frome (Signet Classics) by Edith Wharton
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
This is the only book I know that tells the reader at the outset that you are about to read a horrifying tale and at the end of the book, you must agree.
The Return of the Native (Modern Library Classics)The Return of the Native (Modern Library Classics) by Thomas Hardy
Buy new: $8.95 / Used from: $1.05
Classic Hardy, tragic tale. Despite Hardy's pessimism, I love his novels.
