Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $3.99 Eliot's highest achievement. Even if you don't like the period, the characters are so beautifully realized and drawn, they are timeless. Eliot's almost maternalistic insights (she never had children of her own) into her characters' dilemmas and problems are always magnificant and exquisite.

Buy used from: $12.00 Collins wrote only two novels, both of which I love. Woman in White is considered to be the first thriller, and The Moonstone is viewed as the first mystery. He was friends with Dickens, whose greatness I acknowledge, but whose work I've never liked.
