![]() | Canon EOS 40D 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $649.00 A great camera that doesn't cost too much. The next step up (aside from the 50D) is the 5D series, which costs more than twice as much and has a smaller lens collection (EF-S lenses don't fit it).

You should probably go for the 50D though, or wait for the 60D if you need video.

![]() | Canon BP511A 1390mAh Lithium Ion Battery Pack for Select Digital Cameras and Camcorders
Buy new: $39.26 / Used from: $12.00 It's always good to have extra batteries, and one of these gets me around 700-800 shots on my 40D.

![]() | SanDisk Extreme III 8 GB CompactFlash Flash memory card (SDCFX3-008G-A31, EU Retail Package)
Buy new: $50.69 Fast enough to handle my Canon 40D's 6.5fps burst rate. Holds around 600 RAW photos from said camera (a whole lot more if you only shoot JPEG). Haven't had any problems with it.

![]() | Canon EW-83J Lens Hood for EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens
Buy new: $35.42 A must-have for the Canon 17-55mm lens. Prevents flare and helps protect the front element.

![]() | Nikon 77mm Circular Polarizer II Thin Ring Multi-Coated Glass Filter
Buy new: $139.19 A polarizer is a must-have for landscapes. It's also useful in some other situations. It reduces reflections and gives you bluer skies.
Subpar filters will degrade image quality. This one is of high quality, and it's slim, so it won't cause vignetting on wide-angle lenses. It's also one of the few slim filters with front threads, so it will still take a lens cap.
I use this on my 17-55mm lens.

![]() | Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $370.98 / Used from: $385.00 This lens is great for portraits on a 1.6x crop factor camera. It has a large aperture so it's good in low light, and the price tag is very nice as well.

![]() | Canon ET65III Lens Hood for Canon SLR Lens
Buy new: $24.40 The standard hood for the Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM lens.

![]() | Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $599.99 / Used from: $460.00 If you want to try macro photography, this lens is a great choice. I went for this one instead of Canon's EF-S 60mm USM macro because the longer 100mm focal length gives me more working distance, and I already had a lens close to 60mm. Another benefit over the 60mm is that this one has a focus limiter switch.
As is common with macro lenses, this lens is easily the sharpest lens I own.

![]() | Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $250.00 / Used from: $240.00 Even with fast lenses, a flash is great to have. It gives you control over the lighting, opening up more creative possibilities. And some venues are so poorly lit that even the fastest lenses will struggle. If you doubt the usefulness of flash, read this: http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/

![]() | Sanyo Eneloop 4 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargable Batteries w/ Charger
Buy new: $16.65 / Used from: $14.99 I got this as well as 4 extra eneloop batteries for use in my 430EX II flash unit. These batteries lose their charge much more slowly than regular NiMH batteries, so you don't have to charge them before every occasion. The output is good (fast flash recycling) and I get over 400 shots on a single charge.

![]() | Roscolux Swatch Book, Small Sampler of Almost Every Filter.
Buy new: $3.95 Note: I meant to refer to "Rosco Cinegel #3441 Full Straw CTS" but Amazon doesn't have it. B&H and other stores do.
This is a must-have for indoor flash photography. You tape it over the flash head (I used velcro patches) so that the color of the flash matches the incandescent lighting. Otherwise the lighting will be inconsistent and the use of flash will be obvious in the photo.
