This soundtrack to City of Angels has a mighty tall order to fill. The film is a remake of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, and the German director is known for his effective use of music. But where Wenders can call on his friends such as R.E.M. and Elvis Costello to contribute songs, City of Angels feels more like a marketing device. No less than half the selections are by Warner Bros. artists, including some new music by Alanis Morissette, her first since Jagged Little Pill. That song, "Uninvited," is the album's highlight, a restrained modal ballad in the mode of Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The rest alternates between other female stars such as Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan and bluesy selections from Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton. --Steven Mirkin
Customer Reviews
This album is for grieving... except the Paula Cole song...
Truly a wonderful CD. My favorite song on the album is "I grieve" by Peter Gabriel... wait... That is my second favorite. The first is "Feelin Love" by Paula Cole. It is the perfect love making song. With that said, the CD is amazing and is a great mix.
A wonderful mix of genres
What really makes a film for me is how the music matches the subject matter and the protagonists in the film. City of Angels Soundtrack perhaps makes the film. The soundtrack gives it that badly needed "breath of emotion" to a low key story line. There are countless "love story" film soundtracks and this one is certainly sparse
on schmaltz. The Goo Goo Dolls song "Iris" is a subperb anthem of unrequited Love, which of course is what this film is all about. There's nothing campy or drippy in this piece. Other great soundtracks, "Fandango", "Cinema Paradiso","Falcon and the Snowman","Forres Gump", to name a few.
I highly recommend this for your own personal soundtrack.
Simply Beautiful
One of the best soundtracks out there. "Angel" and "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls are both worth the soundtrack alone. "Iris" speaks to those who really don't want the world to see that part of that of us we keep hidden and safe from the rest of the world. Best buy for a rainy Sunday Morning.
