Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. --Jason Verlinde
Entertainment Weekly
Don Was has made his name as purveyor of grown-up roots pop, a genre that runs through the album like wild horses. Sometimes it works: Witness Gillian Welch's "Paper Wings," which resurrects the dark side of Patsy Cline. Yet Was' penchant for adult-oriented tastefulness also leads to sop like Bob Seger and Martina McBride's "Chances Are"... and not one but two vanilla-wafer covers of Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" (by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood).
USA Today
[ Hope Floats] is a self-contained musical feast that also perfectly conjures the film's cycle of heartbreak, healing and renewed hope.... Several tracks capture the pain of lost love, though none as palpably as Gillian Welch's aching "Paper Wings" ("Paper wings, not real at all, but they took me high enough to really fall"). Lyle Lovett's resurrection of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" nails the classic's ambiguity in a reading that darts from optimism to feigned courage.

A Little Lift For Your Day....
This review refers to the CD edition of "Hope Floats: Music From The Motion Picure" (Various Artists - Soundtrack)....
"When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love...." (Garth Brooks)
Those words are just a taste of the beautiful lyrics to be found on this album. The CD is filled with poignant moments, you'll want to listen to again and again.
"Hope Floats" directed by Forest Whitaker, is a beautiful film. The story revolves around Birdie, a woman who has been terribly hurt by her husband and best friend. She loses all self-esteem, and builds a wall around herself that is so strong, it seems like nobody will ever break through again. Whitaker has added the perfect soundtrack to this story. The music and words are beautiful and meaningful. They are a strong statement, speaking of all the emotions Birdie is going through, and how those close to her bring her the strength she needs to recover, count her blessings, and open her heart once again.
Every track evokes some sort of emotion, from a smile to a tear. It's a great mix of different styles. Lyle Lovett's rendition of "Smile" may even bring goose bumps or a lump to your throat. "Chances Are" is a wonderfully touching duet from Bob Seger and Martina McBride. Also included are The Rolling Stones' "Honest I Do", Garth Brooks', "To Make You Feel My Love", also a lovely version by Trisha Yearwood of that one, Sheryl Crow's "In Need", a fabulous rendition of "Stop In The Name Of Love" by Jonelle Mosser, and Bryan Adams' beautiful tones are oh so recognizable in "When You Love Someone". I am an avid film viewer, and every once in a while the music from the film touches me as much as the film itself. This is one of those soundtracks that I just couldn't get enough of. It's perfect for that lunch break, maybe on a day when things aren't going so great. The music is calming, and the words will give you just that lift you need to get you through the rest of the day. If you have seen the film you will relive all the wonderful moments. Even if you haven't, the music speaks for itself.
The CD sounds great on the stereo. And by the way, it comes with a booklet with all the words to each song and includes some photos from the film as well. It's a CD that seems to be hard to come by right now. Be patient, watch the outside sellers for a good deal(you may want to check with them to be sure the booklet is included). I am including the ASIN because there seems to be some confusion between the soundtrack with various artists(this one), and the movie score itself. ASIN: B000006359

Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through...."(Lyle Lovett)

A great album.
Just wanted to let anyone reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 about how misleading these reviews are, is completely wrong!! Musicfan is talking about a totally different CD. He/She wanted the album with "various artists" but bought the wrong one containing the "original movie soundtrack". This is a great album and worth every cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The "various artists" album has 13 tracks. Just trying to clear up some confusion!
GGGGGGreat CD!
I love the movie "Hope floats" and this soundtrack. This CD is exellent! Although I can't find this one in Japan, I listen everyday, in my car, a front of my computer, over and over again...Always make me good... I love this! I recommend this all of you!
