Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews
Just #1s. That's it.
Appart from a couple 4-star cuts, this record is just amazing. It has all The Beatles' singles that went up to #1, in US and UK charts, arranged chronologically.
You may like it more or less, but you can't deny all the songs here defined the whole sound of contemporary pop/rock music, even till today, no matter how hard the critics are.
It may still lack a few other excellent songs from the band deserving to be on a greatest hits collection, but you may still try to get them sepparately by looking for the career albums.
These are just #1s. Not more. No less.
"The Beatles:1" is Number One!
For all of you who think that this cd is just already available songs put together, i agree with some others about the purpose. this is a digitally remastered cd of all the beatles number one hits. I'm 13 and i used to listen to the old, unremastered beatles and all of my friends were like "why are u listening to all that oldies stuff. now they're actually asking me who is singing it, cause they want to download them! i love this cd and i hope that whatever genius buys it next enjoys it too!!
P.S... Who else is celebrating that the guy who killed john lennon 28 years ago was denied paroll the other day??
In My Ears And In My Eyes
This is a wonderful collection of twenty-seven of The Beatles most popular songs all of which reached number one in both the UK and the USA. Spanning the years 1962 (LOVE ME DO) to 1970 THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD this is a great album to introduce younger music lovers to THE BEATLES music as well as to ignite the memories of baby boomers. A short booklet with pictures of original record covers as well as the date each song was recorded and the dates that song was number one in the US and UK is included.
