Many thought that pop balladeer Michael Bolton's personal transformation ended when he lopped off his shoulder-length hair and released 1998's My Secret Passion, an album of operatic arias. But his first record of new material in four years shows that the boomer pinup boy has continued his metamorphosis. Signed to Jive Records, the label that spawned the careers of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, Bolton enlists the services of Swedish pop Svengali Max Martin, the man who penned Spears's "Oops!... I Did It Again" and the Backstreet Boys' "Shape of My Heart." Superstar producer Mutt Lange wrote the title track and manned the boards, while Lange's spouse, Shania Twain, and Richard Marx made writing contributions. As a result, Bolton has ended up with a pop confection that could top a cake. Ardent, heartfelt, and as transparent as a bride's peignoir, Only a Woman Like You for the most part shows the singer at his very best. Like a hero lifted out of the pages of a Harlequin romance novel, Bolton whispers sweet nothings with every breath he takes. While most of the album sticks tight to a tried-and-true formula of impassioned protestations of undying devotion, Bolton takes a left turn into the boy-band zone with the Latin-tinged "Dance with Me," sounding like an aging Backstreet Boy backed by breaks and rhythms that just beg to be choreographed. Similarly, the misbegotten "I Wanna Hear You Say It" and "This Is the Way" do Bolton's considerable gifts a disservice. --Jaan Uhelszki

" Only a Woman With Money For Me "
One of the most notorious, most successful thief in modern music history.
But give this singing charlatan & his handlers credit! They have made off with more dinero than even most banks could count.
Surely, most of the mega-millions that he has lured into his Cayman accounts has been female money; but I digress, maybe there are guys out there who are so accustomed to forgery, that the real thing " is a thing of the past."
I just saw a picture of this vandalizer & was wondering who he's ripped-off lately. Does he have his eyes set, on a say, Justin Timberlake, the late Robert Goulet, a Brad Pitt " Retrospective, " or maybe a duet with Barry Manilow singing, " Mandy?"
Women, like everyone else, have to grow-up & if you're from the 60's then there is No hope for you.
But if you are content with this very poor facsimile, then you get everything you deserve.
4 years later.
"Only A Woman Like You" is a truly beautiful album. Every song on here is very smooth, and the whole thing flows through very nicely. Minus the ear-splitting vocals Bolton is famous for, Michael shows that he has learned how to be smooth, and instead of his voice being strained, it's REstrained. Great, great album.
A Fair Effort
I had no previous knowledge of Michael Bolton. I had heard his name but had no familiarity with his works and this was my first experience with some of his music. It was not a bad experience but neither was it was I was expecting.
I had some vague notion of a performer in the tradition of Humperdinck or Tom Jones and, in a more modern sort of way, I suppose he is but he is different too. He is more modern with instrumentation and rhythms more in tune with modern music than the big band style arrangements of the past. His voice does not seem as suited to be a solo instrument but carries his tune well enough though it is a bit harsh (perhaps too harsh a term) to my ears.
The songs are mostly loves songs. They are nice and pleasant to listen to but I found nothing utterly memorable.
I will give him another try sometime but fell no urgency in it.
