It's an interesting concept: George Jones, still the gold standard for country singers after nearly half a century, finally recording material submitted to and rejected by him from the '60s through the '90s--songs that would go on to become hits for others. Superbly produced by Keith Stegall, Jones masterfully tackles Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away"; Randy Travis's "On the Other Hand"; "Detroit City," the Mel Tillis composition that became Bobby Bare's signature tune; and Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again." A new version of Hank Williams Jr.'s "The Blues Man" with a cameo from Dolly Parton is reflective and thoughtful. Jones does equally well with "Too Cold at Home," the introductory hit for his friend Mark Chesnutt. While the remake of his own 1981 landmark hit "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is austere and dignified, the biggest surprises are finding Jones had first crack at Henson Cargill's socially relevant 1968 ballad "Skip a Rope" and "Pass Me By," Johnny Rodriguez's 1972 debut hit. Jones's brief notes on each tune provide some interesting hindsight perspectives. --Rich Kienzle

He Stopped Loving Her Today
This is the one George Jones didn't, and that's a good thing considering the possum was living in his car in Nashville right before he recorded, I Am What I Am, his comeback to the stardom album that put George Jones back on the map after his problems and falling out with wife Tammie, and speaking of comeback's how about this 2005 release and what an idea, George Jones singing the hits he really did pass up from the past and present, country artist like Randy Travis',On The Other Hand, Bobby Bare's,Detroit City, Willie Nelson's,Funny How Time Slips Away and Merle Haggard's, Today I Started Loving You Again, one of the best country ballads of all time, I guess you can't pick'em all, then again George Jones choose the right overall songs for this album that may very well be the best Jones ever, loaded with steel guitar from Paul Franklin. And it is if the ol' possum never lost a step...and there's the one George didn't miss, you know the one, sounds the same as the original, maybe better, don't pass up this George Jones cd,it's a newborn classic.
George Jones
When searching for a CD I like to know the tracks on the CD, when released. I do like to know details of CD and a price. Its useful to be able to hear some of the tracks before buying especially if not heard the artist before.
I like to know when the CD to be dispatched and a likely delivery date and it is always useful to have an email when CD dispatched or if there is a delay or problem, or price change etc. I always receive my emails is good condition. The George Jones CD arrived in good condition and is very enjoyable to listen to I purchased this for a specific track for dancing too but have enjoyed the whole CD. Thankyou
Still tops!
What can you say that hasn't already been said. George is still one of the best that ever was. This may or may not be one of his best. It depends on perspective. But in my opinion, this is a good album and very typically Old George. I loved it.
