Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce

Pink Is Alive!5
01. Stupid Girls- This song is very catchy and addicting. The lyrics include humor and sass which make the song an in-your-face anthem. The chorus is bouncy and fun to sing along to.

02. Who Knew- What an amazing song! This is one of my favorite songs ever created! The emotion in the delivery and the lyrics are powerful! This song takes me to another world.

03. Long Way To Happy- This song tells a dark story about sexual abuse, but the song itself is beautiful. The chorus is hard-hitting and full of a range of emotions. The song really strikes a chord with the listener. This is a true gem!

04. Nobody Knows- This song truly displays Pink's beautiful voice and range. This song is slower, but not boring by any means. Another beautiful song which many can probably relate to.

05. Dear Mr. President- This song is perfection. The lyrics, the emotion, the delivery, Pink's voice, and the message all combine to form a powerful, beautiful, amazing song. The chorus gives me chills and the portion of the song where Pink rants about true hard work is deep. This song is one that you will remember forever.

06. I'm Not Dead- I like the melody of the song and the way the lyrics are sung is unique and fun to sing along with. The song is fast-paced, but then the chorus surprises you with a slow-paced delivery.

07. 'Cuz I Can- This song is pure entertainment. This song is fun, addicting, and extremely catchy. The lyrics are put together in such a silly, unique fashion! This is one of the best songs on the album that will get stuck in your head.

08. Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)- Brilliant, brilliant song! This song is one of the most catchy on the album. The chorus is so fun and instantly hooks you in. I love this song insanely! The lyrics are so true, relate able, and really funny.

09. U + Ur Hand- This song is popular because it's catchy and an instant hit! It pushes the envelope with it's edgy message, but everyone will love this song because it's just too fun to pass up. The beats are insane, in a good way, and the lyrics are hilarious!

10. Runaway- Emotional, beautiful, and perfectly put together. The lyrics are powerful as it Pink's delivery, once again! This song doesn't standout against the others, but it's a wonderful song.

11. The One That Got Away- This song is a funny song, and it has a bit of a country vibe to it. It's really simple, which makes it enjoyable. Pink's voice sounds a bit different in this song, it's so soft and a bit more relaxed. This song is really fun and soothing.

12. I Got Money Now- This song is dark, but it is one of my favorites! It is so good! The lyrics are really meaningful and Pink's voice is deep and a bit more quiet on this song. This song is really chill, very soothing.

13. Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self- This song rocks! Everyone can relate to looking back on their childhood and wanting to comfort their little selves through tough times. This song truly hits home for me. This song is a big production of a song and it truly is beautiful and VERY emotional.

14. I Have Seen The Rain- This is a simple song, but beautiful and personal. I love it, and it's very soothing and relaxing. I almost tear up when I listen to this. This is a true beauty of a song.

My Favorite Shade of P!NK5
Yes, that's right. I'm a 30-something-year-old woman (cough cough...) who is coming out of the closet to admit that I adore P!NK! I first fell in love with her music for one simple reason--the girl can sing. In a music industry where pop stars are manufactured from every pretty girl who ever appeared in a Disney movie or hosted her own Nickelodeon show, P!NK is the genuine article--talented, smart, brash and bold enough to get in your face if she has something important to say. She acknowledges this paradox in Don't Let Me Get Me from MISSUNDAZTOOD: (Hey, I said she could sing, not spell!)

"L.A. told me
You'll be a pop star
All you have to change
Is everything you are

Tired of being compared
To damn Britney Spears
She's so pretty
That just ain't me."

She revisited the subject with Stupid Girls on her most recent CD I'M NOT DEAD. The song was accompanied by a hilarious video of P!NK mocking her less talented contemporaries by writhing all over the sudsy hood of a car a la national brain trust Paris Hilton.

MISSUNDAZTOOD is the only CD aside from the hallowed BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: THE MUSICAL that ever stayed in my car CD player for an entire year without me ever getting sick of it.

Part of P!NK's charm is her diversity. She sings pop laced with a sly wit and self-deprecating humor. She sings soul. She rocks like a latter-day Joan Jett on songs like Humble Neighborhood from TRY THIS and Numb from MISSUNDAZTOOD. And she can break your heart with songs like Family Portrait from MISSUNDAZSTOOD, which has to be the most honest account I've ever heard of what's it's like for a frightened child to wake up in the middle of the night to the sounds of breaking glass and her parents screaming at each other.

When we lost our 20-year-old nephew to an accidental drug overdose in August, there was very little that could give me comfort but P!NK'S song Who Knew (written for a dear friend of hers who died from an overdose three years ago) gave my anguish both a voice and a melody.

I've always been a sucker for smart, angry young women who have something genuine to say and refuse to take any crap off of anybody. (Alannis Morissette anyone?) They remind me of what it's like to be racing down the road at seventeen with the windows down and the stereo blasting. But P!NK is even more fun than Alannis because she knows when to wink at her own foibles and ours.

(DISCLAIMER: P!NK's CDs TRY THIS and I'M NOT DEAD contain some profanity. I buy the edited versions for myself and my niece but it's still not too hard to figure out what's missing. The good news is that she doesn't use profanity frequently or gratuitously. So if you like your swearing to have the delicious resonance and eloquence of a good Dennis Miller rant, then it may not bother you.)
