![]() | Folklore by 16 Horsepower
Buy used from: $6.98 Saw these guys open for Grant Lee Buffalo and loved 'em immediately. Kind of twisted dark alternative country. Ominous songwriting. Definitely an acquired taste for some. They have evolved over time, as every good band should.
![]() | Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts by The Adverts
Buy used from: $10.51 Sometimes amateurism can be a great thing! This band truly were to quote one of their songs "one chord wonders" but they sure did make the most of that one chord. Great stuff from the early British punk scene.
![]() | Gentlemen by The Afghan Whigs
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.07 Gotta love a 90's alternative band that infused their music with R&B. Tortured lyrics of relationships gone to hell and self loathing. Never quite made it past being a cult band but they are definitley worth checking out.
![]() | Everclear by American Music Club
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.82 Just one of those bands that makes you scratch your head in puzzlement as to why they never quite "made it." Mark Eitzel is one hell of a songwriter. Hey, AMAZON, this album is by AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB, not Yo La Tengo!!
![]() | Tone Soul Evolution by The Apples in Stereo
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.35 Just a fun band that will make you smile. Their heroes were the Beatles and Beach boys and that's a good indicator as to their sound.
![]() | The Hour of Bewilderbeast by Badly Drawn Boy
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.08 How to describe Badly Drawn Boy? Ummm, postmodern folk? Regardless, Gough is a brilliant (if slightly erratic) songwriter. I'd say if you like Beck or Eliott Smith this would be worth a listen
![]() | Music from Big Pink by The Band
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.50 A great and important band. Nobody was making music like this in the late 60's. Americana based music despite the band, with the exception of Helm, being from Canada. Robbie Robertson was as good a songwriter as anybody during their peak.
![]() | Rejoicing in the Hands by Devendra Banhart
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.87 I admit that this is the only Banhart album I currently own, but it certainly won't be the last. Wow, brilliant melodies, songs that defy easy classification. Is it rock? Ragtime? Folk? The lyrics are kind of stream of consciousness. The only caveat is that Banhart's voice can be a turnoff for some.
![]() | Daddy's Highway by The Bats
Buy used from: $119.80 Brilliant alternative "pop" band from New Zealand
![]() | Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.64 Does anything really need to be said?
![]() | Carry on up the Charts: The Best of the Beautiful South by The Beautiful South
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.39 The Beautiful South are NOT from the south. At least not the American south. Underrated British band who compose bouncy pop with an edge. It's only when you listen to the lyrics that you realize that the songs are cynical, sarcastic and even downright nasty turns on relationships and such.
![]() | Odelay by Beck
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $0.40 Definitely one of the more eclectic musicians of modern times. You'll find virtually every style of music in Beck's albums and despite an occasional slip he has been remarkly consistent throughout the years
![]() | The Great Twenty-Eight by Chuck Berry
Buy used from: $1.49 What can I say? Rock & Roll pretty much begins here
![]() | Bjork - Greatest Hits by Bjork
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $3.41 Extremely innovative artist. Unfortunatley none of her albums have totally worked for me-thousands of Bjork fans scream-I would recommend this for beginners and if you really really like it pursue her albums
![]() | B.R.M.C. by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.95 What can I say? Great loud rock & roll
![]() | Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.94 I don't know when it happened exactly but at some point it became "cool" to like Black Sabbath again. That's a good thing.
![]() | Ultimate Collection by Black Uhuru
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $6.90 Great 2nd generation reggae.
![]() | American Music by The Blasters
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.99 Roots rock. While alternative music was the college scene these boys were proving that back to basics original rock & roll was still valid...and they kicked butt live too.
![]() | Blondie - Greatest Hits by Blondie
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $5.16 Great stuff. Although I've got a greatest hits album listed here there are plenty of Blondie albums worth owning and many of their best songs are not actually the BIG hits.
![]() | The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.25 Again, what can I say? Critics have said that Bowie has always been a follower rather than a trendsetter. Forget all that. Bowie has had so many stages to his career that there is without a doubt something for everyone with him
![]() | Talking with the Taxman About Poetry by Billy Bragg
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $11.95 Let's here it for the socialist. Woody Guthrie meets The Clash.
![]() | The Decline of British Sea Power by British Sea Power
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.20 Like Joy Division and/or Echo & The Bunnymen? Then there is a good chance you'll enjoy the nusic made by BSP
![]() | James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! by James Brown
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $2.05 Yes, this monumental artist is definitely worthy of more than a greatest hits album...but it's a good starting point for the curious
![]() | Grace by Jeff Buckley
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $3.00 An album that really does deserve the hype. Beautiful voice with a Zeppelinish sound on many songs. Would have loved to have seen what his next step as an artist would have been
![]() | Big Red Letter Day by Buffalo Tom
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.97 One of my favorite bands of the 90's. Just a great straight ahead rock band originally dismissed as Dinosaur Jr. wannabees they found their own style.
![]() | Keep It Like a Secret by Built to Spill
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.68 Influenced by Dinosaur Jr. Pavement and Neil Young. Doug Martsch is a modern guitar hero
![]() | The Whole Story by Kate Bush
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $1.99 Okay, Kate's voice can take a while to get used to. But if you are able to, you're in for a treat. Very adventurous artist, literate lyrics and sometimes delightfully "kooky"
![]() | Singles Going Steady by Buzzcocks
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $3.37 The great British punk band that didn't snarl like the Pistols or Clash. Just fun, fast songs about (God help us) love. This is a superb comp of their early singles but they would go forward and do other worthy stuff too
![]() | Televise by Calla
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.66 I've had my ups and downs with this jagged indie band. Some albums I love while others.....nevertheless they are never less than interesting
![]() | First Band on the Moon by The Cardigans
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $0.01 Swedish pop, but that's a bit too simplified. If you really listen to some of the lyrics they are quite wonderfully twisted.
![]() | Cars - Complete Greatest Hits by The Cars
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.97 And they called it New Wave. Whatever. Great singles band who unfortunatley never topped their debut.
![]() | American V: A Hundred Highways by Johnny Cash
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.49 With his own great songs, early days at Sun, superb live albums, interpretations of others songs and a fantastic rebirth in the 90's Cash is the Mount Everest of country music
![]() | Ferment by Catherine Wheel
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.50 And they called them shoegazers. Don't you get tired of all these labels? I won't bore you with all the adjectives used to describe shoegazer bands but I will say that CW were probably more accessible than most and didn't push the vocals to the back like many other bands from this "scene"
![]() | Tender Prey by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.38 While I respect the work Cave did with The Birthday Party they never quite did it for me so I was surprised to find that I loved The Bad Seeds. It's a pretty eclectic mix of styles with themes of love, death and violence. No surprise that Johnny Cash covered a Cave song.
![]() | Ray!: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Ray Charles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.69 R&B, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Soul and even Country. Charles did it all
![]() | London Calling by The Clash
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $3.96 My favorite band ever...approaching fanatical obsession. So, I really can't talk about them objectively. 'Nuff said.
![]() | Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits by Patsy Cline
Buy used from: $0.28 One of the greatest singers in country music. She also was somehwat of a trailblazer for women in the genre. She's deserving of more than the album above but it's how I was introduced to her.
![]() | Walking With Thee by Clinic
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $2.00 Another band I love but are a bit hit and miss for me. You'll definitley here some VU here and other styles from 70's NY along with their own take on garage rock. Great stuff....mostly
![]() | Treasure by Cocteau Twins
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.95 Ammitedly, a band I didn't get the first time around. But I made up for it. A beautiful listen if you give it a chance. Ethereal (THERE, I said it) sounding
![]() | A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.85 Nice and they put on a really good show. Plus, the wife likes 'em
