Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers bring out the best in each other. In The Heartbreak Kid, Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, who--persuaded by his father and friends that he's commitment-phobic--marries a gorgeous and seemingly ideal woman named Lila (Malin Akerman, The Brothers Solomon) that he's been dating for several weeks. But after the wedding, things start to go awry... the least of these being that on their honeymoon, Eddie meets a woman who might truly be the girl of his dreams (Michelle Monaghan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). As in There's Something About Mary, writers/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly push Stiller away from his increasingly schticky "tense guy" persona and draw out his sweeter, more multilayered earnest side. On his end, Stiller provides a human core to what could just be a festival of raunch and absurdity (the movie features aroused donkeys, deviated septum jokes, and digitally-enhanced body hair, among other items of questionable taste). It only takes a quick comparison with Jim Carrey in Me, Myself & Irene or Jack Black in Shallow Hal to see what a surprisingly delicate balance that is. The Heartbreak Kid may not be quite as wildly sublime as There's Something About Mary, but it comes extremely close, with kudos to Akerman for her unrestrained nuttiness. --Bret Fetzer

Vulgar, boring, not funny1
Thankfully, I watched it on HBO and did not spend any extra money. But I'll never have my two hours back! With all the talent in Hollywood, how does something like this tripe get made? By the way, old characters with potty-mouths (Jerry Stiller) have been done to death over the years. Please give it a rest.

Malin Akerman is the reason to get this DVD5
Ben Stiller is wonderfull, but Malin makes the film work.I first saw this great actrees in "THe Comeback," and wondered what happened to her.The middle is alittle boring, but the ending is FANTASTIC.I've read alot of bad reviews, and the movie wasn't a hit,but it will always be one of my favorites.

THE FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER MADE!.......NOT! 2 1/2 STARS!2
Ben Stiller is back in his 20th or so remake of "There's Something About Mary"....Unfortunately they get less funny each time! This movie is excruciatingly bad for the first half and only mildly redeems itself in the second half. A really off mix of extreme "'raunch' & romance!" One of the biggest problems is Stiller's newlywed wife is so obnoxious, you grow tired of watching her and just want to throw her down the nearest elevator shaft! I realize this is the intended response to her, but there's a fine line to walk when you want an audience to stay interested.

The humor is pretty raunchy which doesn't bother me so much, but I was watching this one with my 80+ year old parents!lol! Which had me wincing a few times, wondering how they would react to this vulgar humor. They did survive this uneven mess and actually liked it to a degree because of the relationship between Stiller and his new love interest. Your not missing much, but it's worth checking out if your a fan of Stiller and the Farrelly Brothers brand of humor.
