There Will Be Blood [Theatrical Release]There Will Be Blood [Theatrical Release]
By far the best film of the decade. Daniel Day-Lewis's powerhouse performance drives it, but the supporting cast, writing, direction, score and cinematography all deserve accolades. It is a rarity these days for movies to be both long and well-edited, but despite running over 2.5 hours, every moment here is used masterfully. It neither wears out its welcome nor leaves you unsatisfied. Perfect!

Quite often, the best movies are the hardest ones to describe, and such is the case here. But trust me, you need to see this movie, by far the most original fantasy film in a long time. It's epic, funny, romantic, exciting and exceptionally well-cast. Robert DeNiro has the most uproariously hillarious scene of any movie all year. A new classic!
Enchanted [Blu-ray]Enchanted [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $12.97
Enchanted is a grand, splashy fairy tale musical that celebrates the rich Disney tradition while offering a truly unique experience all its own. The entire movie oozes charm, but Amy Adams is particularly memorable in an Oscar-worthy performance that will be her star-making role akin to Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins. Not to be missed!
Sweeney Todd [Theatrical Release]Sweeney Todd [Theatrical Release]
Sweeney Todd is the most perfect match of director and material in history. Tim Burton's darkly comic sensibility suits the legendary musical to a T, and he goes wild with it. The film is dark, creepy, violent and sad. Yes, Johnny Depp can sing, and he completely inhabits the character's rough madness.
Ratatouille [Blu-ray]Ratatouille [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $19.28
Wow! Pixar has done it again. This is the most original, inventive movie of the summer. It is utterly charming, exciting and hillarious, and it relentlessly pushes the boundaries of computer animation. A breath of fresh air in this summer of sequels, this is that rare must-see which is a marvel both technically and emotionally.
Hairspray (Two-Disc Shake & Shimmy Edition) [Blu-ray]Hairspray (Two-Disc Shake & Shimmy Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $27.95 / Used from: $7.71
This bright, happy bundle of energy is easily one of the most fun movies of the year. Nikki Blonsky makes a terrific debut as Tracy, the cast is phenominal, and Adam Shankman guides the Broadway score successfully into the film world. Perfect.
Away from HerAway from Her
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.89
Slower, wise and reflective without ever being boring, Away From Her is thoughtful entertainment at its very best. First-time feature writer-director Sarah Polley drives the film with a unique vision and received tour de force performances from the entire cast. A must-see that will wow you.
Lust, Caution (Widescreen, NC-17- Rated Edition)Lust, Caution (Widescreen, NC-17- Rated Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.37
Another masterpiece from Ang Lee. Despite getting attention for the NC-17 rating, it is neither dirty nor pornographic. Its explicit sex scenes are essential to the exciting, disturbing story of violent, passionate obsession that will startle and enthrall you. Tense thriller and love story have rarely been combined so effectively. Amazing debut star Tang Wei has a bright career ahead of her.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead [Blu-ray]Before the Devil Knows You're Dead [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $15.67
This smartly-scripted film is both grippingly intense and thought-provoking in its examination of how our choices affect us and others. Also, it is loaded with powerhouse performances from some of the best actors working today. Highly reccomended!
The Kite Runner [Theatrical Release]The Kite Runner [Theatrical Release]
Director Marc Forster's exellent film adaptation condenses the popular novel but easily retains its incredible heart. There is a feeling of authenticity due to the primary use of Dari with English subtitles, and the unknown actors all bring depth to their characters. The chemistry between the two lead boys is particularly memorable. This has the potential to win Best Picture.
Atonement [Theatrical Release]Atonement [Theatrical Release]
Atonement is a compelling drama of searing romance well told, with exellent performances from the entire cast. We often see the same events twice from different perspectives; this unique device allows for an interesting examination of how these different perceptions cause choices and impact concequences for those involved.
Juno [Theatrical Release]Juno [Theatrical Release]
The director of Thank You For Smoking proves his skill with a second home run. It's lower-key than that movie, but just as hillarious. The sharp, distinctive writing is brought to life by a fantastic cast, especially Ellen Page as the offbeat title character. The whole film is sweet and remarkably honest without being sappy. It's a lot of fun to watch.
No Country for Old Men [Blu-ray]No Country for Old Men [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $21.95 / Used from: $14.29
This is a fantastic film, reflecting on the senselessness of violence with terrific acting, skilled direction and a lean, mean script. But a warning: it is incredibly graphic, tensely terrifying and disturbing. Highly reccomended if you think you can stand it. Javier Bardem's physopath serial killer villian is one of the best performances I have ever seen.
Across the Universe [Blu-ray]Across the Universe [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $9.90
Julie Taymor flexes her considerable muscles from both film and theater to create a new movie musical in her own unique highly theatrical style. While other directors would have viewed this simply as an excuse to stage Beatles songs, she makes sure you care about the characters and their story too even while the numbers and the voices also wow you. Evan Rachel Wood gives a standout performance.
The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.92
Wow! Visionary director Paul Greengrass returns to conclude the Bourne series in style, with a raw, gritty, emotional must-see that providees answers while bringing the series full circle to closure. The action is terrific, the pace is perfect and Matt Damon turns in his best performance yet. The only sequel in this year full of them to better the previous films.
La Vie en Rose (Extended Version)La Vie en Rose (Extended Version)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $5.99
Prior to seeing La Vie en Rose, I knew nothing of Edith Piaf's life. Fortunately, it is a phenominally well-made film which is just as affecting without prior knowlege of its angel-voiced subject. Marion Cotillard is a revelation, and as she portrays both Piaf's successes and pitfalls, you are taken on a searing and wonderful emotional journey. A fantastic movie.
300 [Blu-ray]300 [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $22.95 / Used from: $9.99
A stunningly original, visually stylized epic, 300 is an intense and thrilling blood-and-gore story. But there is emotion here too, largely thanks to Gerard Butler, who finally finds in it his long-deserved breakout role. He is incredible as usual, and carries the entire film to terrific heights. A tremendously unique film experience that knows what it wants to be and delivers in spades.
Margot at the Wedding [Theatrical Release]Margot at the Wedding [Theatrical Release]
Noah Baumbach, director of The Squid and the Whale, returns with another compelling drama which feels distinctly true. It's not glamorous, and these characters have all made some really bad choices and screwed up their lives, but it is unflinchingly honest and emotionally real. Fantastically acted and smartly written, this is not one to miss.
Golden DoorGolden Door
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $7.99
This searingly realistic immigration drama is a terrific piece of history which is still extremely relevant. Slow-paced and quiet, it's unflinchingly real and sometimes difficult to watch. Thus, it's not for everyone, but it will reward its viewers with terrific ensamble acting, smart directing and thoughtful writing that all combines to resonate deeply.
Paprika [Blu-ray]Paprika [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $19.98
This eye-popping anime is totally unlike any other film you will see this year. A total mind trip, it is the most original, inventive movie of the summer, and it is refreshing to see an animated film that is so unabashadly adult. In America only Pixar reaches this level of animation sophistocation. This is totally intoxicating.
Michael Clayton [Blu-ray]Michael Clayton [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.45 / Used from: $9.64
Tony Gilroy, who wrote the Jason Bourne franchise for Doug Limen and Paul Greengrass, directs his script himself this time in a very well done legal thriller. The script makes you think, the acting is uniformly fantastic and Gilroy's skilled debut as a director makes him one to watch. Very much worth seeing, but there is nothing particularly exceptional here.
American Gangster 3-Disc Collector's EditionAmerican Gangster 3-Disc Collector's Edition
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $8.37
A compelling drama from director Ridley Scott featuring exciting performances from Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington as men on opposite sides of the law. However, it loses points for being way too long -- a good half hour or more could have been shaved from its 2:40 runtime without losing any of the impact. Very much worth seeing, but hopefully Scott's next film will be edited more tightly.
Broken EnglishBroken English
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $5.03
Parker Posey gives an amazing performance in this sweet indie romance. Small, inward filmmaking, it is written with a real, wonderful emotional honesty. Everyone here feels like a real person you could know, and that intimacy really makes the film. It's also a great, funny crowd-pleaser.
Paris, Je T'Aime (Two Disc Limited Collector's Edition)Paris, Je T'Aime (Two Disc Limited Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $8.88
Paris, je t'aime is an enthralling concept, and these short films fufill it in spades. Each director invites you to a vision of Paris which is distinctivly theirs, and by the time you've seen them all, you've had one of the most original cinematic experiences in years.
Knocked Up - Unrated (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Knocked Up - Unrated (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $7.88
Knocked Up is quick, sharp and hillarious, but instead of simply being gross-out joke after gross-out joke like the overwhelming majority of The 40-Year-Old Virgin which I was forced to watch, there is a genuinely compelling story here and it is surprisingly moving. It's overlong, but you forgive it because it is refreshing in a summer full of sequels. Katherine Higel shines.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End [Blu-ray]Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $22.95 / Used from: $17.95
With a fourth film still to be determined, Pirates goes all out for this fun, exciting knockout of a finale, and it rocks. It's visualy and technically astonishing, but the storyline also deserves note for completing the trilogy well. It's overlong and some things don't quite work, but it's very good.
Meet the Robinsons [Blu-ray]Meet the Robinsons [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $14.48
Disney's first real in-house triumph in CGI and the best CG film made to date outside of Pixar. Though it gets bogged down in its overly busy middle act, the sections that bookend it are terrific. It has great emotional heart, an engaging (if predictable) storyline, and is goregous to look at with bold, splashy colors. The Bowler Hat Guy is a hillarious villian. Great fun!
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [Blu-ray]Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $9.79
This Harry Potter, liberally adapted from the longest book of the series, is surprisingly lean. The reorganized narrative goes so fast you bearly have time to catch your breath. But what is here is quite good and very exciting, and the young cast continues to improve in the hands of new director David Yates, who brings an interesting sense to the series.
The Valet (La Doublure)The Valet (La Doublure)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.85
A hillarious little gem, this movie is light, funny and surprisingly heartwarming for a romcom. A great cast and smart writing makes the most out of it. Not a masterpiece, but highly reccomended as a fun way to spend an hour and a half.
Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray]Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $14.88
Music & Lyrics is a light, funny, sweet romcom and is hard to beat for pure entertainment value. Grant and Barrymore have great chemistry and carry the film wonderfully. The music is catchy, tuneful and sounds remarkably authentic to the '80s time period, and the opening music video for is hillarious. A winner!
Spider-Man 3 [Blu-ray]Spider-Man 3 [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $28.95 / Used from: $4.48
By far the most disappointing film of the year. With three villians and numerous subplots, it gets busier than it should, and it doesn't carry the same emotional weight as the others did. There are good ideas here, but the exicution is far too convulted and cheesy for them to work effectively. After the greatness of Spider-Man 2 set this up perfectly, it's a tremendous letdown.
BeowulfBeowulf
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $1.97
Robert Zemeckis' ambitious motion-capture Beowulf advances the technique but doesn't quite perfect it, resulting in sometimes awkward visuals. However, much of it will knock your socks off, especially in amazing 3-D. A tragic hero arc for the title character is interesting but is unfaithful to the source, and the story overall fails to resonate much after viewing.
