Chic's third album finds the band working at full power on "Good Times," a disco anthem with touches of wistfulness and a hint of mortality. As always, the rhythm section's interplay is tight and inventive, while songs such as "My Forbidden Lover" and "Can't Stand to Love You" further stretch the perimeters of the Chic style and its emotional possibilities. --Rickey Wright

I was in the 10th grade and I remember going to the neighborhood Record shop and buying this album earned from some cash I made mowing a lawn. As I recall on the Dick Clark Rockin' New Years eve show Chic performed "Good Times" for the 1980 new years celebration,it was a blast.I also brought that Queen album with "another one bites the dust" and Queen made the bass line slightly different enough to avoid any lawsuits. (the Sugarhill Gang had previously settled for pirating the Bass line on "Good Times".) I later lost the album when I lent it too a friend of mines and learned it was later damaged, I accepted some cash and never repurchased the album until now on disc, it's a great album. Now Nile Rogers is the only man standing from this ensemble R.I.P....Tony&Bernard.

Chic at it's Greatest5
Following up "C'est CHIC", "Risque" is the band's best all around effort ever. Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards sail thru this album with tight structure, and the late Tony Thompson's drums will have you moving in motion in no time. A must have!!

The Cream Of The Crop5
The most amazing thing about 'Risque' is that it's ACTUALLY ONLY Chic's third album and not only have they reached their musical peak but were already helping redefine modern rock and the nucleus of hip-hop music! And all this for a band most critics dismissed in the beginning! There are only seven songs here and you'll find four of them in their album lengh on the wonderful compilation Dance, Dance, Dance: The Best of Chic. Obviously the album begins on the best possible not with "Good Times" (if more albums began with songs like this there would be way too much great music to pick from) and slow it right down after that with the romantic "A Warm Summer Night".Then it's on to three more uptempo tracks, all with their own special qualities."My Feet Keep Dancing" has a rhythm with a lot of tension that never quite loosens up but when they sing about "I need some help I've been beside myself" the music throbs with emotional resonance. The more obviously disco-ish "My Forbidden Lover" conveys a similar juxtapositioning of musical and emotional feeling with another "Good Times"-like catchy refrain you'll have difficulty out of your head. The brief but crunching funk of "Can't Stand To Love You" shows in glorious form how Chic KNOW where their music comes from!"What About Me" actually ends the whole affair with a similar feel with a funky disco groove. So 'Risque' is like the cavier of disco-funk pop/R&B but mainly in the luxorious sense;the only thing salty about these songs are some of Nile Rodgers' singular lyrical wit and those "clams on a half shell and rollar skates" lol. Whatever else you can say this is truely impressive stuff!
