Countlessly imitated... but there's only one CHIC...
All through the second half of the 70's, countless other bands tried to imitate and emulate the CHIC sound - a sound created by the pure genius of guitarist NILE RODGERS and bassist BERNARD EDWARDS.
But the truth is CHIC had a sound so cool, so stylish and, yes, so chic, that nobody ever toped them in their game.
The secret was a stunning use of a great rhythm section, guitar, bass, strings, horns and (perhaps) the best vocal group on that decade - woth NORMA JEAN WRIGHT, LUTHER VANDROSS (no less) ALFA ANDERSON and DIVA GREY (among others).
LP after LP, they kept releasing songs that, in a way, helped define the shape of pop during the late 70's.
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE is a non stop, dance floor essential disco track with all the talent fully displayed. It is so rich and full of nuances. Sometimes, I do catch myself singing "yowsah, yousah, yousaaahhh!!"
(laughs)
SÃO PAULO is my favorite song in the album. It is the perfect definition of 70's cool. Check that bass!!!!! Check that flute!!!!!
The other tracks are also great. EVERYBODY DANCE is just another classic!!
This album deserves to be in everybody's collection. Enjoy!
CHIC's very first
From the first time I heard Chic's music up to today I've always been a Chic fan... I can still listen to their music over and over again. Their first album I heard way after I had already collected Real People (perhaps my favorite), Très Chic, Risqué and Take it Off, and I remember I had been at first somewhat disappointed because I didn't recognize the female lead vocal who appeared to be a Norma Jean. Alfa Anderson however was already in the vocal line up and so was Luther Vandross by the way. Even though I definitely prefer Luci Martin & Alfa Anderson's distinct vocals because to me they're part of the real 'Chic sound', this album still has them very tight Chic vocal arrangements, lead and back-ups! It's all the way Chic, with the string and perfect rhythm sections (listen to the perfectly arranged and very funky 'Strike Up The Band'), Chic's first 2 Classics 'Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yohswah)', 'Everybody Dance', but it also includes a maybe less typical track named 'Sao Paulo', which is a fine instrumental song with a pronounced Latin American influence. The slow 'Falling in love with you' is a real Chic gem featuring sultry vocals of Norma Jean. A definite must-have for fans of Chic and Rodgers/Edwards Chic productions.
