![]() | OK Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.49 All the praise you've heard for this album is true, but just to reiterate, the paranoid lyrics are genius; the production is brilliant; the melodies are beautiful; the top tracks ("Airbag"; "Paranoid Android"; "Exit Music"; "Let Down"; "Karma Police" and "No Surprises" among them) are some of the best songs I've ever heard in my life, and not a single song is anywhere near bad.

![]() | In Utero by Nirvana
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $1.19 You hear more about Nevermind, but this is my favorite of Nirvana's studio albums. Ragged, honest, utterly sincere, extremely melodic, just plain wonderful. The singles are fantastic ("Heart-Shaped Box"; "Dumb"; "All Apologies"; "Penny Royal Tea") and the album tracks ("Serve the Servants"; "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle") are equally so.

![]() | Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.00 Extremely creative album that knows no genre boundaries. Pretty varied, too - tunes range from quick, concise, lighthearted, and funky ("Been Caught Stealin'") to progressive epics that analyze elements of human nature("Three Days")
|
![]() | Emancipation by Prince
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $2.86 This is my favorite Prince album, actually, and it gets big props for being a thirty-six track, three-hour triple-album without a single weak track on it. I give it even more credit for variety. He does funk, ballads, R&B, rap and even big-band jazz without missing the beat. And I love "The Holy River", too.
|
![]() | Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $1.99 The Smashing Pumpkins are one of my favorite bands, and this is their best album. Billy's in top form as a lyricist ("Mayonaise") and shows us his unique ability to both tug at your heartstrings ("Disarm"; "Soma"; "Luna") and make you bang your head ("Cherub Rock"; "Today"; "Quiet"; "Rocket").
|
![]() | Modern Times by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.54 The classic '60s rockers really came back to life in the '90s and '00s, and this is the best album to emerge from the movement. Dylan plays the blues here, something it turns out he's quite adept at ("Thunder on the Mountain"; "Workingman's Blues #2"). The best song, "Nettie Moore", is quintessential Dylan: lyrics with deep emotional impact with that touch of Dylanesque humor.
|
![]() | Ten by Pearl Jam
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $1.50 The best classic rock album by a modern rock band I've ever heard. The guitars are unbeatable ("Alive"; "Evenflow"), but where it really shines are in the huge ballads with huge choruses ("Jeremy"; "Black"; "Release") or the small ballads with small chorus ("Oceans")
|
![]() | Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.14 A great blend of wonderful pop ("Scar Tissue"), funk ("All Around the World"), and social relevance (title track; "Savior"). The melodies are tops, too ("Road Trippin'") and the chemistry between Frusciante, Flea and Chad Smith is wonderful ("Otherside").
|
![]() | ATLiens by OutKast
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $4.95 I'm not a big fan of rap, but I know what I like and OutKast makes the list. Ridiculously creative, with thoughtful lyrics, amazing atmosphere, and plenty of variety. My favorites are the title song, "Mainstream", "Two Dope Boyz"; "Wheelz of Steel", "Elevators", "Babylon" and "13th Floor/Growin' Old"
|
![]() | Dirt by Alice in Chains
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $1.83 I go back and forth with myself over whether this or Jar of Flies is a better album, but for today I think I'll give this one the edge. Layne Staley's vocals are haunting ("Rooster"; "Them Bones"; "Down in a Hole") and are often supplanted by Jerry Cantrel's stunning guitar ("Rain When I Die"). It's sure depressing, though.
|
![]() | The Joshua Tree by U2
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $2.50 By contrast, this is one of the most uplifting albums I've ever heard. Four massive singles ("Where the Streets Have No Name"; "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for"; "With or Without You"; "Bullet the Blue Sky") made U2 the superstars they at the time deserved to be; and Bono's passionate vocals make a few of these songs what they are ("Exit").
|
![]() | All Hands on the Bad One by Sleater-Kinney
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.39 I'm in awe. Sleater-Kinney have plenty of melodic sense - every song has multiple hook s- and indescribable harmonies are mindblowing. Oh yeah, and it rocks, too.
|
![]() | 1+1 by Herbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.49 This is about as abstract as jazz gets. No rhythm section at all, which means you can just focus on the sensitive, beautiful interplay between Hancock and Shorter. One of my favorite Herbie Hancock discs - it's a bit repetitive, but even the lesser tracks have moments of genius.
|
![]() | Shine by Joni Mitchell
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $3.49 Joni's one of my favorite artists and this is one of her finest albums. It's not a landmark like Blue, Court and Spark, or For the Roses, but it's tough for me not to love the lyrics, melodies, and mellow atmosphere found throughout. Her best since Heijra, actually.
|
![]() | Superunknown by Soundgarden
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $2.25 I'm not an enormous Soundgarden fan, but these are some tasty singles, melodic metal with a brain. Includes the classics "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman", "The Day I Tried to Live" and "Superunknown".
|
![]() | Harvest Moon by Neil Young
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.49 Good stuff! Neil crawled out of his '80s rut with Freedom, and kept his momentum going with the aptly-named Ragged Glory, but it's this, the mellow country-folk sequel-in-spirit to Harvest, that REALLY grabs me. "Natural Beauty" is one of my top ten Neil Young songs.
|
![]() | Stone Temple Pilots by Stone Temple Pilots
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.75 Simply put, this is entertainment in its purest form. No innovation; little experimentation; just hooks, hooks, and more hooks. "Interstate Love Song" was, without a doubt, one of the greatest singles of the '90s.
|
![]() | A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $3.43 Carrying on the grand traditions of U2 and Radiohead, Coldplay relies on sincerity, falsetto, and weird production, and it REALLY works. "The Scientist" can move me to tears, and that piano part on "Clocks" is amazing.
|
![]() | A Time To Love by Stevie Wonder
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.99 I always find a way to work Stevie into my favorite-albums list, and it's because he's a genius. This is his best album in quite a long time, with the funk quotient high and the sincerity quotient higher. Great Prince guest spot on "So What the Fuss", too.
|
![]() | Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes
Buy used from: $3.22 Overrated as this group is, I've gotta admit this is a great album! Jack White's songwriting is at its peak, and the quiet songs ("Little Ghost"; "Ugly as I May Seem"; "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)"; "Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)") can easily stand against the stock-and-trade garage-rockers such as "Blue Orchid" and "The Denial Twist"
