This edition has the added benefit of providing explanations of what was in Lewis Carroll's mind in writing Alice in Wonderland - and most certainly, there was a great deal of subtext to this "wonderful" book!

A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's CourtA Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain

Such a funny book! It is mind-expanding, too, as cross-century problems get solved. Twain was on a roll!
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $9.21
This takes a mature reader, especially for the third volume. But it is so worth it! Pullmann's story is fully the equal of the Harry Potter series in its vivid descriptions of fantastic but recognizeable alternative universes. I especially like the gritty heroine, and of course, the armored bear.
A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1) by Ursula K. Le Guin
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Ursula K. Le Guin may well be the best living American children's story writer. They pull the reader in to a fantasy world like no other.
Freckles (The Library of Indiana Classics)Freckles (The Library of Indiana Classics) by Gene Stratton-Porter
Buy new: $11.58 / Used from: $0.90
Probably the first children's book centering on environmentalism. The Limberlost Wilderness is beautifully portrayed, and the reader's heart will ache at its predicted destruction (written close to 100 years ago!) The adventures are gripping, and the story of a one-armed orphan who succeeds despite odds is inspiring. The book's period language can be overlooked.
The Jungle Book (Tor Classics)The Jungle Book (Tor Classics) by Rudyard Kipling
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01
How wonderful! Rudyard Kipling knew India well and brings it alive for young readers. His characters are totally unforgettable!
Just So Stories (Books of Wonder)Just So Stories (Books of Wonder) by Rudyard Kipling
Buy new: $18.24 / Used from: $1.00
Kipling not only tells a great story but slips in useful morals as well. Children love his characters.
Kidnapped (Penguin Classics)Kidnapped (Penguin Classics) by Robert Louis Stevenson
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $0.01
What a rouser! Pirates, treasure, betrayals, great sailing ships, great adventures! Robert Louis Stevenson really knows what sets a child's imagination alight, and works his material to the utmost
Little Women (Signet Classics)Little Women (Signet Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $1.32
This classic story tells much about the difficulties American women faced in running households around the time of the Civil War. The young women in the story are different and well-characterized, and girl readers always enjoy choosing which of the sisters appeals most to their imagination.
The World of Christopher Robin: The Complete When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six (Pooh Original Edition)The World of Christopher Robin: The Complete When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six (Pooh Original Edition) by A. A. Milne
Buy used from: $18.33
These poems are simply wonderful. They appeal in rhythm, in rhyme and in subject matter to the younger end of readers. Perhaps a parent should read them aloud at first so that the young listeners get the full benefit of A. A. Milne's fine work.
Mary Poppins: Three Enchanting Classics: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, and Mary Poppins Opens the DoorMary Poppins: Three Enchanting Classics: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, and Mary Poppins Opens the Door by P. L. Travers
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $11.64
This series is not sugary. In fact, Mary's tartness is the most endearing characteristic of these adventures - along with the enduring Victorian adventures found within these covers. Children will enjoy this tartness and savor it - it is, somehow, both steadying and comforting to learn that there are limits to what they can get away with!
Paddle-to-the-SeaPaddle-to-the-Sea by Holling C. Holling
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $2.80
It is hard to know which is the premier feature of this book - the storyline, the facts about the Great Lakes, or the gorgeous, gorgeous illustrations which engross children's attention. A true classic, it deserves to be in every child's bookcase!
Peter Pan (100th Anniversary Edition)Peter Pan (100th Anniversary Edition) by J. M. Barrie
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $9.15
J. M. Barrie knew a lot about how children's minds work, because he remained a child in many ways for all his life. Pirates, fairies with magic dust, and above all, reveling in childhood and fearing the path towards adulthood are among the aspects that have made this classic book live on.
Richard Halliburton's Complete Book of MarvelsRichard Halliburton's Complete Book of Marvels by Richard Halliburton
Buy used from: $69.50
I read a book once that listed the books that famous authors loved best. This book came up time and time again!. Halliburton wrote about the world's most magic places to visit, (like the Taj Mahal), bringing them to life for children without being at all condescending. Children will LOVE geography after reading this book. It will probably make them world-travelers as adults!
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Silver on the Tree; The Grey King; Greenwitch; The Dark Is Rising; and Over Sea, Under StoneThe Dark Is Rising Sequence: Silver on the Tree; The Grey King; Greenwitch; The Dark Is Rising; and Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper
Buy used from: $16.10
Powerful stuff in here! Yet another Brit who can create a fascinating, often dark ancientworld that draws readers in. Merlin and the Chalice Quest are told here in vivid language that bounces from a sunlit, modern world into a very old one run by very different rules and studded with wonderful, dreamily fearsome chase scenes. Addictive!
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Full-Color Collector's Edition)The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Full-Color Collector's Edition) by C. S. Lewis
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia, and, I believe, the best. Children find themselves in an alternative, dark, fairytale universe, and have to find their way back. They learn much about themselves in the process. Its emphasis on good vs. evil reflects Lewis' personal spiritual journey and the impending Second World War.
The Little PrinceThe Little Prince
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $0.41
Antoine de Saint-Exupery was a famed French flier, lost in WWII. His tale of a little prince in space is charming, witty and sad, in turn, as most true children's classic are. A book a child will turn to, again and again!

Buy new: $17.95 / Used from: $14.95
Some of the other Oz stories besides The Wonderful Wizard of Oz are well worth reading. Two favorites are The Patchwork Girl of Oz - a scatterbrained rebel of a heroin - and Tik-Tok of Oz - a grand robot. L. Frank Baum is the earliest true American genius of children's tales, and he deserves every accolade for his achievements.
The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and the CurdieThe Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and the Curdie
I reread these two books throughout my youth. A super Quest story with an impatient young princess, a stalwart miner boy who crosses class lines, and a gorgeous fairy grandmother who appears only in the light of a full moon. They confront angry, powerful goblins wreaking destruction. MacDonald's imagination soars in both books - well worth the read.
The Secret Garden (The Illus Children's Library)The Secret Garden (The Illus Children's Library) by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.55
A classic tale in which children create a universe without the knowledge of the outside adult world. The children are none too nice, and their efforts improve them in unexpected ways. Orphaned and semi-orphaned children are a recurring theme in children's books, and their separateness is beautifully handled here. A much-loved book!
The Story of King Arthur and His Knights 1912The Story of King Arthur and His Knights 1912 by Howard Pyle
Buy new: $22.59 / Used from: $10.95
Howard Pyles' classic illustrations are spectacular! The story and the illustrations combine seamlessly to create an utterly enchanting world of knights in shining armor, jousts, quests, damsels in distress, castles and the entire universe of Chivalry! This is IT for kids who love losing themselves in a magic realm that still calls us today.
The Wind in the WillowsThe Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $10.95
Kids love this book because it attacks adult pomposity. Toad does what he wants to do without remorse, regardless of laws and expectations. Grahame is so funny and so talented a writer that parents should easily forgive this - there's a time and place for serious accountability, but this isn't one of them. Your kids deserve a great time at Toad Hall!
The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-PoohThe Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $1.16
Everyone knows Winnie the Pooh. I think he is so beloved because while some characters are slow, some are not quite bright, and some are mournful, in this child-friendly world, adventures come out fine. It's quite reassuring. Milne knew how a child's mind works, and used his expertise well. It's slyly funny, appealing to children's perception of their place in the universe.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Mark Twain Library)The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Mark Twain Library) by Mark Twain
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $1.09
Tom Sawyer could live next door. And yet, he inhabits his 19th C. American world perfectly. Bringing that world into the minds and hearts of 21st C. American children is what Tom Sawyer does best. Kids still easily understand him, his motives and his deeds. Mark Twain was an extraordinary observer of childhood in his era, and his characters still remain engaging today.
Robinson Crusoe (Norton Critical Editions)Robinson Crusoe (Norton Critical Editions) by Daniel Defoe
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $1.30
This book answers questions about the importance of personal ingenuity as a tool in life. Young people pit themselves against adversity to see if they can succeed against odds. They can test themselves as they read this book. Would they make the same efforts that Robinson Crusoe did, or would they try something else? This stretches the mind, and that's what Robinson Crusoe does best!
