Latin influenced Disco!
This album was released in 1977, at the height of the disco craze when everyone was jumping and Donna Summer was the queen. We had it on vinyl when I was a kid so it was very much a part of the soundtrack to my youth. Their odd name was carried through to the LP back cover photo (included on the CD) of a stunning lady staring at a meal of rice and beans. I almost passed out when I saw it was available on CD just last week!
As their name implies, Rice & Beans orchestra were an orchestra (led by Pepe Luis Soto), so we get loads of magical instrumental stretches. The musicianship is superb; strings (what would disco be without those?), congas, synths, keyboards, horns, and angelic female vocals (Hilda Harris, Vivian Cherry, Yolanda McCullough, and Helene Miles) mostly singing together as one voice.
Upbeat dance numbers were "You've got magic" (#11 on Billboard's Club Play singles chart), "Music in the air", "Midnite gossip", the clap-filled "Dancing vibrations", the instrumental "Coconut groove", and the cheesy but fun midtempo funk feel of "Peel a banana". The album's lone ballad was "Love is on my mind", a sweeping beauty similar in tempo and feel to Donna Summer's "Love to love you baby".
Beautiful Latin influenced Disco, vital to any Disco completist.
spooky, breathy disco darkness...
Hey friends, I'm only reviewing this so you don't have to
waste the time I did in listening to the (30 sec) samples.
I know... perhaps that isn't giving this album a fair shake,
but here's one opinion: ...you MAY agree, and maybe NOT!
I found this record to be an eerie cross between BW's Love
Unlimited Orchestra and the soundtrack to Xanadu! (An awful,
nauseating combo, to say the least!) I ran across this while
searching for good (disco-style) dance music, and while I do
not claim to know anything about YOUR tastes, I did NOT find
this music too enjoyable OR danceable, at all!
Bottom line: Save your time AND your money. PASS THIS ONE BY!
