Customer Reviews
Lots of Gold, but a bit of silver and bronze, too.
I agree with the other reviewers that this double-disc set is the most comprehensive Stephanie Mills collection issued to date. Most of the time this is a good thing, but a few of the tracks are clearly not in the same league as her most memorable cuts (blame it on lesser songs and dated 1980s production, not on Stephanie's consistently strong vocals). That explains my 4-star rating. Let me add a couple of points:
1) This set covers not only her early 20th Century and Casablanca label albums, but also the later MCA period, plus there's some non-lp cuts and remixes. It's great to have tracks such as "Whatcha Gonna Do" and "A Rush On Me" under one roof.
2) Although this disc does have several new-to-CD extended versions (including "You Can't Run..."), most of the classic Mtume/Lucas productions in particular are heard in their regular album versions (e.g., "Whatcha...," "Put Your Body In It"). THE BEST OF (Funk Essentials) is the place to go to get the recommended longer versions.
3) James Mtume and Reggie Lucas have always been among my favorite progressive musicians via their period with Miles Davis. Although they take a considerably different approach to their production work, their best efforts -- including here on much of disc one -- stand the test of time remarkably well, and I'd say are the highlights of this collection.
Despite the occasional drop in overall quality, GOLD is still a highly recommended place to get the best overall recap of Stephanie's classic albums.
The BEST Stephanie Mills collection, including 12" mixes and B-sides
If you're a fan of Ms. Mills, this new "GOLD" best-of collection is a no-brainer - really, for casual listeners, this is all the Stephanie you'll ever need. What makes this collection so special for fans is that includes RARE early singles like LAST NIGHT and NIGHT GAMES, as well as RARE 12" INCH MIXES of dance hits like YOU CAN'T RUN FROM MY LOVE and TWO HEARTS, both worth the price of admission alone, PLUS several rare B-SIDES like WAILIN' and more - nice photos from all her styles/eras, this is really a nice package that pays respect to the soaring, unique voice of Ms. Mills!
CLASSIC STEPHANIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can't catch this vocal "Wiz" in concert, here's the next best thing, This blazing 2-disc set features some of the best Stephanie has to offer the now classics "Whatcha gonna do with my lovin?","Put your body in it', "Feel the Fire", the 12inch version of "Two Hearts" with Teddy Pendergrass also the haunting "Night Games" both taken from the awesome 1981 "Stephanie" album. There's also the dancable 12inch version of "You can't run from my love", "Last Night" and the Ashford & Simpson penned "Keep Away Girls "from 1982's "Tantalizingly Hot!" Don't forget the international dance hits "Pilot Error" and "The Medicine Song" there are plenty of #1's-"I feel good all over" "Puttin a rush on me", the melodic "Something In The Way (You make me feel) "I've learned to respect the power of love" and the now classic "Home".Check out the Prince penned tune "How come u don't call me anymore" it's blusey, jazzy, sexy unlike any other version you ever heard! If you want real R&B, real Singing, real Romantic music.....you deserve one more thrill....pick it up!
