Very Good!
First and foremost, this is NOT Saint Germain's new album. I think I've said it 9 times now, but have to say it again. He (Ludovic Navarre) didn't do these song. Having said that, I've come to expect good things from this annual (sometimes bi-annual) compilation series off of Wagram. It has some competition from it's own label with Hotel Costes and Buddha Bar getting, IMO, the most accolades. But this is the one I go to the most because it just seems to hit the right chord with me. The concept's simple - nu-jazz with electronica - and it often succeeds. The last three volumes though have been mixing it up a bit, turning the series into a two disc set with a more themed second cd for the 'originality' heads out there. This one's no different as the second cd is from a Des Pres Cafe regular (and acclaimed DJ) Laurent Daumail, aka "DJ Cam".
I really enjoyed this album. There was something about it that went down smooth, like the perfect cocktail. This particular edition has loads of soul on top of the jazz and has a distinctly 'cool' feel to it. It starts with a bang with the drums and stick hits on Nostalgia 77's "Wildflower". Nice singing, great soul, amazing rhythm. Sort of reminds me of Fertile Ground's "Yellow Daisies" in a few ways (which was one a previous edition of this series). US3's "I'll Be Right Back" follows up nicely. It's certainly modern! But it was even more-so funky. "Native", remixed by Nicola Conte, had tha ttypical Nicola Conte vibe to it. And by 'typical', I mean 'class'. Amazing arrangements and completely transforming a song into a nu-jazz masterpiece with keys and very smooth solos. Metropolitan Jazz Affair's "Everybody Knows" was nicely done, and I also liked Third Eye's "Macedonia". Third Eye... I suppose Nicola Conte's working on more than one new project! I can't mentoin all of the songs because so many of them were quality - Spiritual South, Smoove, Nils Krogh not to mentoin Jazzanova all had good songs. But one that stuc kwith me was Me & You's "Last Night". Where did that come from?! Totally unexpected.
Disc two was an album the DJ Cam Quartet. There were some pretty cool tracks on it but to be honest, it didn't pull my attention nearly as much as the first disc. It felt a bit like the group was still very new together. But with songs like "Ribirth of Cool", thei rversion of "So Sweet" and the vocalist Inlove, they've got a promising future.
So I recommend this one. I really enjoyed it - more so the first disc than the second. There were a few songs here that I've heard and already been spinning like "Trading Eights", which is now a Schema classic. And not all of the songs grabbed me but there were some pretty cool tracks here and it didn't lull me to sleep. There was rap on the album - but not the kind of rap that you hear on the radio waves (which is a shame because this is the good stuff!) and sometimes it really felt like they were channeling Guru/Jazzamatazz. If you like this, check out some of the older volumes in the series but be warned that this one has a bit less of an electronic feel than it's predecessors.
Great!!!
Nothing more, just great!
If you Love chillout or electronic music in general, just listen to "Dolomiti Super Chill"!
You will Love it!!!
