Album Description
Follow up to critically acclaimed first three releases in the 'Vintage Grooves' series 'Old School Hip Hop', 'Funk' and 'Disco'. Once again is lovingly selected by our resident superstar compiler and DJ Ian Dewhirst of Mastercuts fame. Continuing with the same ethos set with the first three releases there are absolutely no filler tracks, only 12" full version original mixes have been used and extensive track by track sleevenotes are included. Classic Dance showcases the series of records in the early 80's which clearly defined the way in which disco would mutate into 80's dance music . Features classics such as Young & Co's 'I Like (What You're Doing To Me)' followed swiftly by Evelyn 'Champagne' King's U.S No.1 'I'm In Love', Indeep's Top 20 seminal hit 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' and the Arthur Baker produced proto electro 'Walking On Sunshine' by Rockers Revenge. A record which exemplifies the raw optimism of early 1980's club culture is undoubtedly Class Action's 'Weekend'. The Francois K reworked 'You're The One For Me' by D. Train hit No. 1 in the U.S as did Aretha Franklin's 1982 'Jump To It'. 'Somebody Else's Guy' by Jocelyn Brown Brings us nicely to the end of the 80's along with Kariya's 'Let Me Love You For Tonight' - still filling floors everywhere some 18 years later and is the perfect way to close this heart-felt Vintage Grooves superb package.
Customer Reviews
some rare on cd tracks, but all appear to be taken from vinyl
I purchased this compilation largely because I wanted the 12" mix of Young & Company's "I Like (What You're Doing To Me)" on cd. Well, it's obvious that this track was taken from a vinyl 12" single and not a master tape, and the vinyl was pretty scratched. The intro before the beat comes in is fairly quiet and the surface noise of the vinyl is very audible.
Though I didn't listen as closely to all of the other tracks, I think that most (or perhaps all) of them are also "needle drops." Sure, there are some songs on here that haven't appeared regularly on cd, so if you want those songs and don't already have the original vinyl, then these comps aren't so bad. If you're hoping to find scratch-free sounding versions on cd, however, then you should give this title a pass.
Also notable is that some of the tracks aren't quite the mixes I would expect, though this is perhaps due to different mixes being originally issued in England (where these discs were compiled) versus the U.S. For example, Evelyn King's "I'm In Love" has a strange ending that I've never heard before; it's definitely not the U.S. 12" version but maybe this version was released on 12" vinyl somewhere else.
All in all, I could only recommend this title to disco fanatics like me who want some of these tracks and have been unable to find or afford the original vinyl. I'm glad to finally get the full-length version of the Young & Company song, even if it is obviously lifted from a well loved copy of vinyl.
WHAT A WASTE!
I am so annoyed that I spent my money on this CD. There should be laws in place to protect consumers from these record companies that misrepresent their products. The first track on the first CD is VERY OBVIOUSLY lifted from vinyl (scratches galore!!). Unlimited Touch's "Searching to find the One" that appears here IS NOT the 12" Mix, it's the album version. And Aretha Franklin's "Jump to It" has been edited down. Most notably, the intro has been shortened, probably to try to hide the fact that it's lifted from vinyl (the intro only has vocals, no music, which allows the listener to hear all of the scratches, pops, and hisses on the vinyl from which it's lifted). This CD is an absolute insult to avid music fans like myself, not to mention an insult to your pocket. Folks, my advice: pass this one up. Had this CD been executed the way it should have been, it would have made for an awesome CD. But everyone's got game these days. What a crying shame.
Sounds fine to me..!
This stuff is the TRUTH, just get it! I hope they do 100 more I would buy every one if they are this good.
