![]() | Play with the Changes by 4hero
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $6.46 Definitely more soulful and jazzy than any previous albums but 4hero haven't abandoned their jungle, drum & bass and break beat roots entirely. A very complete album.
![]() | Vol. 2-Dream Merchant by 9th Wonder
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $7.13 The man with the soulful beats wins again - but I do get the feeling that he's better with Little Brother than he is on his own. Still, another great album. A million times better than this year's offerings from, say Kanye West or 50 Cent, definitely.
![]() | A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina) by Terence Blanchard
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $4.74 Trumpeter Blanchard mourns for his home town New Orleans and it is truly heartbreaking (but totally beautiful) stuff. Unmissable.
![]() | Pilgrimage by Michael Brecker
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.42 Tenor sax player Brecker's Swan Song. He got in some of his friends - Metheny, Hancock, Mehldau, Patitucci & DeJohnette - and left life's stage with a bang. Iconic.
![]() | Call Me Irresponsible by Michael Bublé
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $7.25 Another set of songs from the cool dude. He has his critics, apparently, but for easy listening vocals and interpreting jazz standards, the truth is there's no one to beat him out there right now.
![]() | Daughtry by Daughtry
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.00 Remarkably good album from the man who didn't win "American Idol" but did pick up a couple of American Music Awards recently. More power to him.
![]() | The Daily News by Donnie
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.74 Not as good as "The Colored Section" by any stretch of the imagination but still a good piece of work with some good tunes and let's face it - the man can definitely sing. No one does social commentary soul better than Donnie and for me, that's what brings him to the top of the pile.
![]() | In My Element by Robert Glasper
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.86 Prodigious talent on the piano serves up excellent jazz but keeps his ear to the hip-hop beats on the streets. Incredible.
![]() | Southern Comfort by Anthony Hamilton
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $8.09 This 'unofficial' release from the soul singer just proves what an immense talent he is. We await his next 'official' release patiently.
![]() | The Return of the Magnificent by DJ Jazzy Jeff
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.48 Thanks to DJ Jazzy Jeff for being one of the people this year who restored my faith in hip-hop. Pure hip-hop beats, soulful and jazzy grooves and informative and inspirational lyrics. I personally couldn't ask for more.
![]() | Not Too Late by Norah Jones
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.00 Another performer who though very popular, has critics foaming at the mouth, knives out, waiting for her to fail. But she's found a formula that works and, bless her, for now she's sticking with it. That's fine by me.
![]() | Lost & Found by Ledisi
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.93 Ledisi has had to water her sound down a tad for mainstream acceptance - and I do hope it pays off for her - but this album still has enough of the soul singer to satisfy.
![]() | It Won't Be Soon Before Long by Maroon 5
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.66 Didn't work for me the same way "Songs About Jane" did but there's no doubt these are talented guys. The album is a grower - I don't play it that often, I have to confess, but each time I do play it I hear something new and like the album even more. Definitely worth checking out.
![]() | From The Plantation To The Penitentiary by Wynton Marsalis
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $1.78 Trumpeter Wynton gets political and for the first time I could actually get into his music. It's great fun but with a serious message. Inspirational.
![]() | Metheny Mehldau Quartet by Pat Metheny
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $8.47 Guitarist Metheny and pianist Mehldau return for the second part of their inventive collaboration. I thought it was absolutely stunning.
![]() | I Am by Chrisette Michele
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $3.41 Fresh. That's the one word that comes to mind every time I listen to this lady's album. After guesting last year with Nas and Jay-Z, she presented herself and music lovers all over the world welcomed her into their homes. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
![]() | In the Moment by Bob Mintzer Quartet
Buy used from: $22.70 This album from Yellojacket frontman tenor sax player Bob Mintzer is one of those that does exactly what it says on the tin. Beautifully crafted songs played with heart. He's another of my favourite tenor players.
![]() | Luvanmusiq by Musiq Soulchild
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.18 A mixed bag. Some of the songs on here are simply awful but the ones that are good are so good, there was no way I wasn't going to have this album. The man is a phenomenal talent in my opinion; he just has to leave the radio-friendly r&b alone and get back to the modern soul he's known for.
![]() | Hip Hop Is Dead by Nas
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.00 Okay, I cheated slightly with this one but I ordered it on the 19th of December last year and it didn't arrive until after Christmas - too late to include it in the 2006 list. "Hip Hop Is Dead" has its moments but I suppose most people know that by now. I was impressed and Nas hasn't impressed me in a long, long while.
![]() | The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams (Limited Edition Soft Pack) by Meshell Ndegeocello
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $5.58 Bassist Meshell continues to knock down boundaries and defy categorisation - and I love her for it. I never know what to expect from a Meshell album and that's what makes her so exciting. A vastly underrated talent.
![]() | Wines & Spirits by Rahsaan Patterson
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.37 Patterson has upped his game and gone places that took many by surprise. It's still soul though and it's still great soul. One of my more exciting buys of the year.
![]() | Song for Anyone by Chris Potter
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.30 Tenor sax player Potter gets symphonic and the results are really breathtaking. He's one of my favourite tenor men.
![]() | Famous by Puddle of Mudd
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $2.75 Puddle of Mudd are beginning to find their own voice after two albums of sounding like they wished they were Nirvana (not that I was complaining). It's not a brilliant album, just a very good one.
![]() | Back East by Joshua Redman Trio
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $5.26 I actually gave this 3.5 stars and added the extra .5 as a mark of respect. It's a great album intellectually and artistically but it does nothing for me on an emotional level. That said, whenever I put it on to play in the background while working, I often find myself humming along. Maybe I'll grow to love it.
![]() | ...Left by Eric Roberson
Buy used from: $52.45 One of the most consistent yet underrated soul singers I've ever heard. Brilliant album, this.
![]() | This Meets That by John Scofield
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.85 Scofield's back! His first full-bodied album in years and the guitarist with flair does not disappoint. One of my happiest buys this year.
![]() | Collaborations by Jill Scott
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.89 Our Jill put this compilation of earlier collaborations out earlier in the year to whet our appetites for the new CD "The Real Thing", which eventually arrived in the summer. This is the much better album in my view and that's all I'm going to say.
![]() | Truth and Beauty by Sam Yahel Trio
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $7.88 The album title says it all really. Keyboardist Yahel is joined again by Brian Blade on drums and Joshua Redman on sax. Yahel plays the Hammond B3 and it is something to behold.
![]() | The Rise and Fall of Keite Young by Keite Young
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.73 Another man with the nuts to go his own way and do his own thing when it would've been much easier - and probably more profitable - to go with the crowd. His music shows great imagination and creativity. Respect due.
