Very challenging, but also fun
If you're at all familiar with Guitar Hero games, you already know the basics. but this is probably the best thus far in many ways. First of all, it looks really good, the animation is smooth and detailed and the "fret board" (where the notes appear) has been tweaked slightly to make it easier to time your strums and to see if notes are played at the same time or if they are sequenced (GH2's fret board seems "flatter" so the notes come towards you rather than down like in this game, i like it this way). Also, hammerons and pulloffs are much much easier to recognize on screen.
The wired controller is good- it stands up to use better than the previous PS2 guitars. you obviously don't have to worry about batteries or anything. The cable length is good for small to medium sized TVs, anyone with a big screen and some room to maneuver should get the wireless guitar.
Song selection is good, i prefer this list over GH2. And the downloadable content is getting better (though they seem to take their time between releasing track packs, unlike Rock Band). On the plus side, some of the tracks are free to download (though they probably aren't available year round).
My only real complaint is that, compared to Rock Band, at the highest difficulties, this game gets almost impossible. Just look on youtube, watch someone play Reign in Blood on expert (not to mention Through the Fire and the Flames!). Just insanely frustrating. hoewver, the lower difficulties are reasonable and most people should have plenty of fun in the easy and medium categories (nothing really changes, the songs just get harder).
May Cause Lack of Studying for Students
This game is too much fun, it's addicting...Whether or not that is a good thing is your discretion. It is most fun to play with friends, even if you only own one guitar. I can't count how many times a group of my friends just sat in a dorm room playing this game, trying to one-up the other person's score. It doesn't ever get boring, especially because of the downloadable content.
Which leads to one complaint I must state: the amount they charge for the downloadable songs. Sure there are quite a few free songs, but the majority of them you have to pay for and they are about $6 or $7 for a 3-song pack. If you want to buy all the downloadable content you better be ready to shell out some cash. The game disc does have over 70 songs on it so the downloadable stuff isn't absolutely necessary.
The only other downfall with this game would have to be the controller. I prefer the wired controller because you don't have to worry about batteries which can get expensive over time. But, and this plagues just about all guitar hero guitars (wired or wireless), there durability. They get worn very fast because people play them hard. I hit the fret buttons very hard and they have started to have problems. Other people complain about the whammy bar becoming worn out. And occasionally it seems like the controllers just don't register.
Regardless of these two complaints, the game still has provided me with more than enough satisfaction and was definitely worth purchasing.
guitair hero 3
this game is definatly one of my favorites, the best thing is on xbox the guitar will play on rockband as well. on ps3 however it will not work on both games. i have enjoyed this game for the last month and still am not tired of playing it. if you like rock music this will keep you busy for a while. and after you get tired of the songs you can download more on xbox live. i got the wired version i suggest you get the wireless. the wires drive me crazy. i rate this game high on my list, and its fun for all ages...
