Hugh Johnson's the Story of WineHugh Johnson's the Story of Wine by Hugh Johnson
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $7.34
Hugh Johnson is at best a literary-wine writer. His prose is like a gorgeous glass of wine. He tells the store of wine not as an ongoing narrative but as a series of vignettes throughout time, from the ancient world to the modern day. This too is like a coffee table book but deeply rewarding in its ability to take you away.

The New France: A Complete Guide to Contemporary French Wine (Mitchell Beazley Wine Guides)The New France: A Complete Guide to Contemporary French Wine (Mitchell Beazley Wine Guides) by Andrew Jefford
Buy new: $31.80 / Used from: $23.99
Andrew Jefford is an expert. He has written for numerous wine journals, including Decanter. This book is a little bit different from The New Italy and The New Spain. Whereas the latter two focus on wine regions, giving great introductions, recommending certain producers, Jefford explores the modern outlook of long-established and exciting but emerging wineries in France.
Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of ItalyVino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy by Joseph Bastianich
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $11.10
This is one of my favourite books on Italian Wine. It is more detailed than The New Italy (less photographs but the black and white pictures remind me of the films of De Sica and Fellini and other Neo-Realist directors). It is an excellent reference guide but also a good read. There are recipes for local cuisines and a region-by-region exploration of the different wines. The best.

A Life UncorkedA Life Uncorked by Hugh Johnson
Buy new: $23.07 / Used from: $5.00
Hugh Johnson's autobiography reads less like a memoir and more like a personal approach to wine. For those who get their feet truly wet with vino, having Hugh around is like having a good mentor with a trusty and human approach to wine.
