Where Britney Spears's first two albums hewed to the early-'60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler--a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway--her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single "I'm a Slave 4 U," a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she'll do anything you want as long as it's dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears's poses. Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: "Overprotected," "Let Me Be," and a cover of "I Love Rock & Roll" that brings to mind its bubblegum roots. Even without the joyous disco tribute of "Anticipating" and the not-icky ballad "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" providing symbolic respite from the rest of this machine-tooled music, Britney is one of the most human discs of the current teen-pop boom. If it spins off the deserved string of radio/video smashes, it may even buy this superstar a second 15 minutes. --Rickey Wright

brittney still num. 1
all of her cds are the best I cant pick a fave but brit is great. this cd rocks though im going 2 collect every single 1.
Quite Arguably Her Best Record
Of all Britney's records, I like this one the best. I don't much like 'Slave 4 U,' But "Overprotected' has a catchy edge. 'Lonely' is different, but catchy. 'I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman' has a pleasant sound. I don't like 'Boys.' 'Anticipating' has a nice pleasant sound. The cover 'I Love Rock and Roll' has a good sound. 'Cinderella' has a GREAT rocky edge, and is arguably the greatest song on the record. 'Let Me Be' is a more gentle song, but still nice. 'Bombastic Love' is different sounding, but still good. 'That's Where You Take Me' is listenable. 'What It's Like To Be Me' has a notable energy, and ends the record on a high note. Of all Britney's records, I feel this has the strongest energy as well as the best consistency.
Kinda late for a review, but oh well
Britney was her best cd out of the 5, in my opinion. This cd has the kind of music I wish Britney would still be making; songs with meaning... substance... not a bunch of dance music about having sex and partying.
This entire album, with the possible exception of "Anticipating", is 5 stars.
