Why pick on a girl for taking a chance? After experiencing flagging sales, Jewel has become proactive and given herself a cosmetic and artistic makeover. But 0304 isn't the winsome thrush's first leap into the unknown. Hiring Shakira producer Lester A. Mendez to give her solemn, folksy songs a pop sheen and some dance beats isn't as radical as starring as a Civil War widow in an Ang Lee film. Besides it's a lot more interesting to hear her squeeze her chaste, malleable soprano around an accordion solo in the futuristic namedropping fable "Intuition" or her voice a beat-driven condemnation of the George W. Bush regime on "America" to see her sashaying on the silver screen in those tight bodices and hoop skirts. Although she has changed the very structure and sound of her songs, Jewel's undeniable talent shines through. She still has a way with words and her voice is remains as pure as an Alaskan stream. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews

JEWEL "0304"5
I've been a fan of Jewel's for many years now, I'm absolutely loving her latest album "Perfectly Clear" - it's since writing a review for it and reading reviews for it and her other albums that I thought I'll have to write one for her "0304" album.

I've had the album since the week it was released and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, yeah the front cover is quite 80's and the disc is bright pink, which is different to all her albums, but Jewel said she wanted to make a Pop album and that is what she did, Avril Lavigne has been criticised for the same thing over her latest album. Why is it that if the music is Pop then automatically it must be a "sell-out"? Two things that Jewel that Jewel is on a high level with is her vocals and her songwriting, and this album is no different, "Stand," "2 Find U," "Doin' Fine," "America" and "Becoming" show some of Jewel's best lyrics, so it's not as if her unique style as an artist went missing here, when an artist stays with a similar sound they get criticised for not being creative, Jewel is definitely ceative on "0304" and this isn't just a regular Pop album, Jewel has made a really great Pop here with great lyrics and great vocals.

Really bad!1
Im a HUGE Jewel fan but was so dissapointed with this. There is not one song on this album that I truely like. It is overproduced and Jewel should stay well away from the pop music she has produced on this album as it does not suit her at all. If you like Jewel and want to continue to like her dont buy this album!

Enough Of Those Poor Reviews For "0304"4
Unlike all of Jewel's previous albums, 0304 has a new distinctive flare, that is appealling. I can understand the mixed reactions that this album created. When people think of "Jewel," they think of slow-ballad-folk-like-music. Well, I enjoyed the more up-beat, almost "club-like" music that she features in 0304. If you are a true Jewel fan, this might be disappointing, but if you have never heard anything by her before, you might be impressed. I have just purchased my second copy of this disc as I lost mine about a year ago. I have had a serious urge to hear "intuition" and "Yes U can." 4 outa 5 for me.
