Often Misjudged5
I became a fan of Mae when I heard "Suspension" and subsequently bought The Everglow. It was simply a beautiful album, and so when Singularity came out, I was eager to hear it. Although it lacks some of the prettier melodies that The Everglow had, and some of the song writing is a bit formulaic (every song pretty much goes verse, refrain, verse, refrain, bridge, refrain) it's still highly enjoyable. Some of the more notable tracks are "Just Let Go" (my personal favorite), "Release Me", "Waiting", and "Home". The instrumentals are great, the lyrics are superb as always, and the editing is clean. I just think it's unfortunate that this album has gotten such low ratings; I mean, it's still far and above most of the garbage people listen to these days that still get 4+ stars. Admittedly, it's not Mae at their best, but it still deserves more recognition.

Horrible.. I miss the old Mae sound. -- Edited FOUR STARS2
I really don't like Singularity at all. Maybe "Just Let Go" and "Home" are good songs, but the rest... no, I'm sorry, they're just so.. different from the old Mae sound that I'm used to.
The lyrics are so bland, and they're moving toward a different side of the rock spectrum.
I used to listen to Mae because their songs made me happy or at peace, and now.. they just make me feel so conflicted on the inside. I don't know whether or not this was Mae's intention, but I don't like it. And I have a feeling that old Mae fans don't/won't like this album either.
------

Now that I've listened to it for more than a month, I've been really liking this album. It's still not as good as their older albums, but... it's still great. As for rating, I'd change it to FOUR STARS.
Mae is still one of my favorite bands. I'm still highly anticipating their next album!

Disappointing. 2
I loved Everglow, so when I bought Singularity, I tried very hard to reserve judgment, as it's sometimes hard to listen to the follow-up of a favorite CD without being disappointed. While Singularity has a couple good songs, it's a rerun of Everglow at best and sounds like bland, overdone Hoobastank at worst. It definitely doesn't have the same sweet sparkle or unified "experience" like Everglow, and shows a lot less creative effort. Many of the melodies sound atonal and strained to my ears, and are frankly hard to follow, let alone sing along to. Too many songs sound similar, so much so that most of the album forgettably runs together.

1. Brink of Disaster - Fun, upbeat song with catchy lyrics and awesome, dynamic sound with spacey effects. A strong start to the album. 9/10

2. Crazy 8s - Decent song, nothing special. Reminds me of Jimmy Eat World's style. It ends with a fade-out, which is lame considering that Mae is usually pretty creative at transitioning songs. 7/10

3. Sometimes I Can't Make it Alone - the first of too many songs on this album that tragically sounds like Hoobastank. Its melody, guitar style, and even lyrics strongly remind of Hoobastank's weak excuse for rock music. 5/10

4. Just Let Go - Ahh, this sounds a lot more like the Mae I know and love! It has shimmering piano that reminds of Everglow. 8/10

5. On Top - Catchy song, fun but fluffy lyrics. 7/10

6. Waiting - Too much synthesizer sound. Weird melody. Forgettable. 5/10

7. Sic Semper Tyrannis - sounds like Hoobastank again (groan). Easily confused for "Sometimes I Can't Make it Alone." 5/10

8. Release me - One of the few that sounds like true Mae. A very sweet and loving song with beautiful lyrics, great vocals, and a slow and gentle melody. 9/10

9. Telescopes - Another terrible song that sound like Hoobastank! Tied for the worst song on the CD. 4/10

10. Rocket - Annoying driving drums, detached lyrics, strange melody and dissonant song. Tied for the worst song on the CD. 4/10

11. Home - Has a somewhat interesting sound, but nothing too original. Another forgettable one. 5/10

12. Reflections - a nice, slow break from the frenetic fast-paced songs. The lyrics are profound in a superficial way, paradoxically. The song gets dull fast and has an agonizing, repetitive instrumental ending that drones and blares on for a full minute and a half. 6/10

14. Last Transmission II - Yes, there is a bonus track on this CD (after a track 13 of silence). The melody is half dissonant, half catchy. The last 4 whole minutes - yes, FOUR - of the song are dumb phrases stuck on repeat. A long waste of sound waves. 4/10

Overall, I regret wasting the money on this whole album. If I had known better, I would have just bought tracks 1, 4, and 8 and skipped the rest. I'm not against a band changing and experimenting, but Singularity fell very, very short. I can only hope Mae's next album features their talents better.
