![]() | Third by Portishead
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $5.98 Portishead comes back after an 11 year silence and releases one of the most acclaimed albums of '08. "Machine Gun" is it's best track.
![]() | Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $7.69 After generating some buzz with their EP, they release this full length, and it's a stunner. They're widely compared to Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket, but their music is still unique and fresh. Very pretty folk rock.
![]() | Quaristice by Autechre
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.02 There's not much more intimidating then a 20 track experimental electronic record. It's not for everyone, but it's personally one of my favorites so far this year.
![]() | The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull by Earth
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $10.55 In case you didn't hear 2005's awesome Hex, the legendary and influential drone metal band has moved in to a much more ambient and subdued territory. This album sounds like something Ennio Morricone would have composed, as it has a very western atmosphere.
![]() | Saturdays=Youth by M83
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.50 Some M83 fans were upset by this release, as it was a departure from the bleak and dark shoegaze they fell in love with on Before the Dawn Heals Us. Instead, Saturdays=Youth is built around 80s nostalgia. Yeah, it's cheesy at times, but it's also heartfelt and sincere. And of course, the music is pretty good too.
![]() | Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $5.00 The hype machine really got goin' for these guys. It's not a ground-breaking album, but it is a lot of fun.
![]() | Red Yellow & Blue by Born Ruffians
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.84 Another young band with some decent buzz released their debut full length. A very solid album, but there's some definate room for improvement. Update: It's grown in to one of my favorite albums of the year.
![]() | Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99 Well, around this time last year the Arcade Fire cast a bleak light on religion, life, and our country with Neon Bible. This year, Nick Cave does the same. He just has a wicked sense of humor.
![]() | Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.56 I bought this album just for the opening track, "Time to Pretend". It's not a very consistent record, but it shows that these two have a ton of talent and potential.
![]() | Trouble in Dreams by Destroyer
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.24 Some people wrote this off as "more of the same" from Dan Bejar. For everyone else who isn't yet sick of Bejar's folk-tinged indie rock and Dylan-esque lyrics, this is yet another impressive Destroyer album.
![]() | Parc Avenue by Plants and Animals
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.90 I haven't heard all of this record yet, but from what I have heard, these guys have a very bright future in the indie scene.
![]() | Here's To Being Here by Jason Collett
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.78 A consistently enjoyable record from the Broken Social Scene collaborator.
![]() | Nouns (W/Book) (Dig) by No Age
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.89 Sub Pop brings up another awesome indie group. They should end up having a pretty good year (both Sub Pop and No Age). It's basically shoegaze/noise pop with a punk attitude.
![]() | Kensington Heights by Constantines
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.93 You pretty much know what to expect from an album released by Arts and Crafts (Broken Social Scene's label). Solid indie rock.
![]() | Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel by Atlas Sound
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $10.24 The solo project of Bradford Cox, lead singer of Deerhunter. This is some of the most compelling music he has yet made. The critics were won over, too.
![]() | For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $11.35 Justin Vernon is rapidly becoming an indie superstar, and no one deserves it more than he does.
![]() | The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust by Saul Williams
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.87 The physical release of the poet/rapper/actor/screen writer's 3rd lp includes 3 new songs. Some people can't really get in to him, but I thought this cd was incredible. I'm not a big NIN fan, but Trent Reznor deffinately brought a lot to this album.
![]() | Assassins: Black Meddle, Pt.1 by Nachtmystium
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.49 This album has grown on me like an alien fungus. It's heavy, but has some genuinely pretty moments.
![]() | Watershed by Opeth
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.45 I thought I was going to hate this album when I heard the first song, but luckily it quickly abandons that sappy soft prog for the loud and heavy prog that has made them one of the most prominent metal bands.
![]() | LP3 by Ratatat
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99 I'm having a hard time getting to a conclusive opinion of these guys. This album is thoroughly enjoyable, but I can't help but agree with the widespread criticism that they would benefit from a vocalist (they're an electro-rock instrumental duo, if you didn't know).
![]() | The Devil, You + Me by The Notwist
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.33 What's up with the Notwist? They made one of the most aclaimed albums of the decade with Neon Golden, yet they get very little attention. This album didn't really match the previous one's acclaim, but it was still very impressive.
![]() | You & Me by The Walkmen
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $7.50 These guys were supposed to come to my town with Vampire Weekend. Vampire Weekend bailed out in order to play on Saturday Night Live, and the Walkmen came on their own, and I decided not to go. I was an idiot, as this album is incredible. I'll definately pay more attention to them now.
![]() | At Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.95 No, they could not match their classic debut (I blame all the side projects) but this is still a very solid album.
![]() | Carried to Dust by Calexico
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.99 Calexico may be better known for their collaborations with other musicians, but they make some very pretty music. And I can actually understand the spanish parts! I knew I took five years of spanish for a reason...
![]() | The Stand Ins by Okkervil River
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.35 Last year's Stage Names was actually supposed to be a double album, but the Okkervil River (band names should be plurals!) were persuaded to hold the second disc for a future release, and here it is! It's an impressive follow up to an even more impressive album, but I think had they been released as the double album they were supposed to be, then it would be a classic.
![]() | Rook by Shearwater
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.98 Jonathan Meiburg, the bird lovin' ex-member of Okkervil River, releases one of the most acclaimed albums of the year with his new band. Has he surpassed his old band? I don't know, but Rook has some stellar moments. Also, listen for Meiburg on The Stand Ins on one track.
![]() | Crystal Castles by Crystal Castles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.29 Definately one of the more bizarre dance records of the year, as it can be kind of abrasive at times. But it's a lot of fun and "Vanished" is impossibly catchy.
![]() | Chemical Chords by Stereolab
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.70 Stereolab is a fun band to follow, and while their latest may seem like little more than smooth and funky easy listening, it greatly rewards your attention.
![]() | In Ghost Colours by Cut Copy
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $7.98 Incredible pop album. Similar in intention to Saturdays=Youth, but more exciting and energyzing in execution.
![]() | Brighter Than Creation's Dark by Drive-By Truckers
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.35 Damn, this is a huge album. 19 tracks that average around 4 minutes a piece. Not all of it's good (I personally can't get in to the country stuff) but just enough of it is awesome to make this one of the southern rockers' best albums.
![]() | The Hawk Is Howling by Mogwai
Buy used from: $12.24 Why have some critics decided to attack Mogwai? Pitchfork doesn't give any good reasons for scoring it so low. I liked it a lot, though. They're obviously not going to recreate Young Team, but that doesn't mean they're done.
![]() | Dear Science, by TV on the Radio
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.95 I thought Return to Cookie Mountain couldn't be topped, that these guys had reached their peak. I was incredibly wrong. Update: It's not holding up too well on repeat listens. Not their best album, in my humble opinion.
![]() | Journey to the West by Monkey
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.99 Yes, Damon Alburn, of Blur and Gorrilaz fame, has composed an opera based on a Chinese myth about a monkey and a pig or something. And yes, it is sung in Chinese (thankfully, the booklet translates much of it). But it really is much better and more accessible then you're probably thinking.
![]() | All the Way by Growing
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.75 Ambient post-rockers, or subdued noice group? Growing is still hard to pin down. Their latest isn't the best entry point, but for the converted, it's very solid.
![]() | Offend Maggie by Deerhoof
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $12.14 I had a hard time getting in to Friend Opportunity, so imagine my surprise when I took a chance on Deerhoof's latest and found my favorite album of the year. Just hear it.
![]() | Vivian Girls by The Vivian Girls
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.06 I love albums like this. Only 20 minutes long, but they don't waste a second. Similar in sound to No Age.
![]() | In Ear Park by Department of Eagles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.90 I know, I want new Grizzly Bear music too. But trust me, this album from the same guys (minus one) is arguably just as good.
![]() | Furr by Blitzen Trapper
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $10.74 The best rock band that not enough people listen to. They sound a little more like the Beatles than the Band this time around.
![]() | Microcastle by Deerhunter
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $12.36 Their third album is spectacular. I liked Cryptograms, but it seems like they finally lived up to the hype here.
![]() | Chemistry Of Common Life by Fucked Up
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.74 Avoids logical description. Metal, hardcore, punk, indie rock, post-rock, etc. It's crazy good, though, and the lead vocalist is the best.
