![]() | Sony Alpha A700 12.24MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $1,299.99 / Used from: $930.00 The body. By far the best of the Alphas. Unlike the 200/300/350 it has a depth of field button, it's eye-start focusing does not activate unless you are gripping the camera, MLU (if that means something to you), feels better in the hand, and frankly is just a better camera.
![]() | Sony VG-C70AM Alpha Vertical Grip
Buy new: $299.95 The vertical grip for the A700. Easier vertical picture taking, double battery life, and the grip has all the functions you are used to on the built in camera.

![]() | Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens for Sony & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras
One of the better sub-500$ lenses available. Excellent walk-around lens - I'd rather have a constant f2.8 than a longer reach in most cases. I originally obtained a bad copy - sent it Tamron and they repaired it - the lens is sharp and fast. APS-C
![]() | Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $156.67 Probably the best lens for the money - especially considering how cheap this one is. If you can't afford the G 70-300mm lens, this is the one to choose. I've read that the Sigms 70-300mm APO has less purple fringing and it is only a little more expensive (for a lens) - of course it is heavier too. FF
![]() | Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras
Buy new: $249.00 / Used from: $194.00 I've not used this lens. It may be the better option than the Tamron, but it is heavier and marginally more expensive. Make sure you buy this version (APO) and not the cheaper one. In light of the reviews, I'd probably buy this one over the Tamron, but either are good choices.
![]() | Sony SAL70300G 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM ED G-Series Compact Super Telephoto Zoom Lens
Buy new: $799.99 If you can afford it, the lens has is very nice with SSM - as you would expect from a G-class lens. Beware though, the hood is very large and when attached it looks like you're carrying around a small canon. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP A/M 1:1 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: Too low to display An awesome macro lens. You can't go wrong with this lens. Probably the more popular choice over the more expensive Sony 100mm. FF
![]() | Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $639.99 A great lens, but I frankly don't see enough quality difference between it and the 90mm Tamron to make it worth it. You can probably find an old Minolta 100mm for cheaper as well - I use an old Minolta, which is fantastic. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 180mm f/3.5 Di SP A/M FEC LD (IF) 1:1 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: Too low to display I like Macro and I've enjoyed the Minolta 100mm so much that I think a little extra reach might be very enjoyable. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 200-500mm f/5.0-6.3 Di LD SP FEC (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: Too low to display If the Bigma is too heavy, this is the other top contender. I'm waiting till the Sony 70-400mm G comes out before buying a super long tele now. FF
![]() | Sony SAL70400G 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM Lens (Black)
Buy new: $1,499.99 The first G lens I'm putting a lot of thought into buying. The Sigma 50-500mm is over $1000 now and for $500 more you get a G lens with SSM. Lot will depend on the performance once it comes out and if I think I need that extra 100mm.
![]() | Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO RF Telephoto Zoom Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,159.00 The "Bigma". Good lens for the range. Its biggest draw back is its heft. Many will say you can't shoot handheld with it, but an equal number say you can (probably depends on your strength and endurance). I'd suggest a monopod or tripod though just in case. I'm waiting till the Sony 70-400mm G comes out before buying a super long tele now. FF
![]() | Sony SAL-24105 24-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Aspherical Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $469.99 I've been seriously considering this lens. One of the few Sony zoom (not G) full frame lenses and covers an excellent range. I haven't been able to find too many complaints (or praises either for that matter). There are rumors of a G lens version that is coming with SSM and a constant f/4 aperture... that would be nice but pricey. Just have to wait and see. FF
![]() | Tamron SP Autofocus 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: Too low to display This is probably the better choice over the 24-105mm Sony with the extra reach. Haven't found enough direct comparisons to be confident. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $399.00 Overlaps with the 17-50mm Tamron, but it is full frame if you are considering upgrading and it bridges the 50-70mm gap. Gets great reviews. FF
![]() | Manfrotto 680B Monopod (4-SCTN) - Replaces 680 (Black)
Buy new: $60.00 Monopod. Slightly shorter than the 681B, but fits into a carry on (diagonally). The 681B does not. Makes sure you get a head.
![]() | Sony NPFM500H Alpha Rechargeable Battery Pack
Buy new: $49.24 / Used from: $44.00 Battery life is excellent, but it is always good to have a spare.
![]() | Sandisk Extreme USB 2.0 3in1 Card Reader (SDDRX3-3IN1-901, US Retail Package)
Buy new: $69.95 Reads CompactFlash cards. Faster than connecting the camera to the computer and doesn't drain battery.
![]() | SanDisk 8 GB Extreme III CF Card SDCFX3-008G-A31 (Retail Package)
Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $39.99 If you are shooting raw, you are going to want a large card. 4 GB at the min. If you shoot raw+jpeg, it is absolutely needed.
![]() | Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Black)
Buy new: $112.95 Nice pack and I like the quick camera access. Straps are easier to control than the Tamron Adventure 9. It's missing the ability to carry a tripod though. One bit of warning though, the A700 moves a bit in the bag (plenty of padding though) without a vertical grip being attached. The upper compartment is big enough for lunch :) and the laptop compartment should make flying a little easier.
![]() | Tamrac 3537077 Express 7 Camera Bag (Khaki)
Buy new: $49.95 Good bag for a walk around town. Doesn't look like a camera bag (plus for me). Fits the A700 and three lenses easily.
![]() | Sony SAL-20F28 20mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $559.99 / Used from: $499.00 Prime wide lens. Gets excellent reviews. If landscape is your thing, this is a good choice. FF
![]() | Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras
Buy new: $779.00 / Used from: $1,593.50 Wide. Very wide (and full frame). You can go another couple mm if you buy the APS-C lens. FF
![]() | Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $349.99 The old minolta 50mm f/1.4 usually sell for $200-250 (and going up) on ebay now. Lens is sharp and fast. Everything you should expect. The 17-50mm Tamron when stopped down can gives me pretty good quality shots at 50mm so I'm not in a hurry on this one. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras
It's out. It's got good reviews. It's cheaper than Sony ($2000) - shocker I know . Should be a worthy replacement of the Beercan (minolta 70-210mm f/4) if you don't mind the weight and not having SSM. The Sony is the only way to go though if you want SSM. FF
![]() | Sony 24 -70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras
Buy used from: $1,849.00 I'd love to have this lens, but simply cannot afford it. If I shot full frame I might consider it, but I don't. This is a full frame lens as well, so if you ever decide to upgrade to the future Sony FF alpha it will stay with you. FF
![]() | Sony SAL-1680Z 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T DT Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy used from: $649.00 Highly praised Zeiss lens. Tamron 17-50mm does me just fine - and it is a constant f/2.8. APS-C
![]() | Sony SAL18250 Alpha DT 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 High Magnification Zoom Lens
Buy new: $549.99 / Used from: $539.99 Supposedly marginally faster than the Tamron, but same quality. The ultimate for "walking around". It won't match the quality of a specialty lens, but it is probably the best generalist. APS-C
![]() | Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 AF Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $498.95 Tamron version of the Sony lens or Sony version of the Tamron - I'm not sure. The ultimate for "walking around". It won't match the quality of a specialty lens, but it is probably the best generalist. APS-C
![]() | Sony SAL1635Z 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens
Buy new: $1,799.99 What is there to say? Constant f/2.8. Full frame. SSM. Zeiss. This covers about 24-52mm on APS-C. FF
![]() | Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $1,799.99 G, f/2.8, SSM... Sigh. The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 is your other excellent option at $800, but no SSM. FF
![]() | Sony AC-VQ900AM AC/DC Adapter and Battery Charger for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $121.14 I don't often have two drained batteries, but this would be nice when I do. That said, I can't convince myself that a battery charger should cost over $100.
![]() | Sony Alpha A200K 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization with 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens
Buy new: $499.99 / Used from: $425.00 |
![]() | Sony Alpha DSLRA300K 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization with DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
Buy new: $599.99 / Used from: $533.53 I'd prefer this over the A350. It is cheaper (even with the kit lens) and 10mp is more than enough.
![]() | Sony VG-B30AM Vertical Grip for Sony Alpha Digital SLRs
Buy new: $236.78 / Used from: $220.00 |
![]() | Sony Alpha A900 24.6MP Digital SLR Camera (Black)
Buy new: $2,999.99 The Flagship of the Sony line. It's expensive, but Full Frame. I'm perfectly content with my A700 (although you would think the price would be coming down for those...)
![]() | Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $154.49 |
![]() | Manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect System
Buy new: $70.00 A head for the tripod or monopod.
![]() | Opteka Remote Release Cord Sony Alpha DSLR A700, A350, A300, A200, A100 SLR Digital Camera
Buy new: $14.95 Far cheaper than the Sony version. If you have a tripod, I can't think of reason you wouldn't want a remote. Don't buy the Sony version. You're would just be paying for the name "Sony". It just encourages them to price things idiotically.
![]() | Sony SAL-300F28G G Series 300mm f/2.8 Super Telephoto Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $5,999.99 Yeah. Right.
