Canon EOS 30D 8.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Canon EOS 30D 8.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $699.00 / Used from: $650.00
Basically as good as the 40D at a better price (better value in my opinion). Great dynamic range performance for a small censor DSLR. A 20D is also a good choice if you can find a cheap one in good shape. Never buy equipment from professionals. It may be "well serviced" but I guarantee they used the crap out of it. It's best looking for a seller who's loaded and doesn't take a lot of photos.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera LensCanon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
Buy new: $89.74 / Used from: $85.00
This lens is very sharp for it's price. The next sharpest lens costs about $200 more (50mm f1.4). The must have lens for the budget photographer.

Great results for the price.
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $700.00 / Used from: $659.99
I know this is supposed to be a budget kit but if you can afford it, this is a great lens. It's wide and one of the cheapest L-Series lenses. If not, the 30D kit lens (18-55mm 3.5-whatever) isn't a terrible alternative.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $606.95
This is another optional lens. Again, if you can afford it I definitely recommend it. It's sharp and fast for $600. If you absolutely need a telephoto and can't afford this, I recommend the Sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 APO. Make sure its the APO version and not the other Sigma 70-300. You can find an APO for around $200. A decent performer for the price.
Tamrac Explorer 2 DSLR Camera Bag (Blue)Tamrac Explorer 2 DSLR Camera Bag (Blue)

I tried looking for my first bag (a Lowepro) but it seems to be discontinued. It was a great bag until my dog chewed off the strap. I wouldn't recommend any of the new Lowepro shoulder bags. They use clip on shoulder straps that may seem convenient but actually are very unsafe for your camera. I chose this bag because it's similar to my first bag and big enough to fit all the gear I have listed.
