Book I Read During Summer 07
By an Amazon.com customer
B-MotherB-Mother by Maureen O'Brien
Buy new: $18.72 / Used from: $0.01
A...I loved this book. I read it in less than 24 hours and it really stuck with me. Its a moving story and I think any woman under 25 will find the main character especially relatable.
The Crimson Petal and the WhiteThe Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
A-...This book took me forever to read but its well-written and entertaining. I never stopped being curious about what would happen next.
A Wedding in DecemberA Wedding in December by Anita Shreve
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $0.01
B-...This book was on the best seller list for several months but I have no idea why. The only thing more ostentatious than Shreve's writing style is her characters.
Regarding the Pain of OthersRegarding the Pain of Others by Susan Sontag
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $3.24
A+...I read this book for a class I took this summer and I LOVED it.
If You Lived Here: A NovelIf You Lived Here: A Novel by Dana Sachs
Buy new: $19.46 / Used from: $0.01
A-...I recommend this book because none of the big themes are subjects that generally interest me but I liked this book nonetheless which leads me to believe that there are a lot of people who would flat-out LOVE Dana Sachs' fiction debut.
The Dogs of Babel: A NovelThe Dogs of Babel: A Novel by Carolyn Parkhurst
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.01
B+...I'd been wanting to read this book for ages which might be why I found it slightly disapointing. On the whole its good and definitely a must for dog lovers but it wasn't what I expected it to be.
Ellen FosterEllen Foster by Kaye Gibbons
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $0.01
A+ I had this as required reading when I was a junior in high school. I re-read it this summer because I wasn't sure that I ever finished it. Now that I'm sure I have, I can officially say that Ellen Foster is my all-time favorite literary heroine. This is a great book.
Eye ContactEye Contact by Cammie McGovern
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $0.01
C+...McGovern's heart was clearly in the right place and she writes well but her story is far-fetched and overly complicated. This book is essentially a murder-mystery and there is nothing worse than a murder-mystery with an ending as unsatisfactory as this one's is.
The Double Bind: A NovelThe Double Bind: A Novel by Chris Bohjalian
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $0.12
A-...This book has a gripping prologue, a lengthy (sometimes boring) middle, and a fantastic (albeit startling) ending. The last 80 pages are terrific; this book really got to me.
Can You Keep a Secret? Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
B+...As a general work of fiction, I can't [in good conscience] give this book better than a B+. However, as a chick-lit novel, it deserves a solid A. This book is everything chick-lit should be: funny, light, refreshing, etc. I literally laughed out-loud at least five or six times while reading this book.
The Infidelity PactThe Infidelity Pact by Carrie Karasyov
Buy new: $17.21 / Used from: $0.01
C-...Not recommended. I strongly disliked this book. The characters are vastly under-developed and the ending is silly. Plus, I found two typos.
Everything I Needed to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy BlumeEverything I Needed to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume by Jennifer O'Connell
Buy new: $15.64 / Used from: $1.54
A...This is a super cute tribute to Judy Blume, the reigning authority on being a pubescent girl. Most of the essays are by contemporary Chick Lit authors and I felt like I was being clued-in as to whose books I should be looking out for if I'm trying to read Chick Lit while avoiding poorly constructed fiascos like the afforementioned 'Infidelity Pact'.
