Ina May's Guide to ChildbirthIna May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $9.00
Ina May literally wrote the book on midwifery. The first half is positive stories about births, which I loved reading. The second is information about pregnancy, labor and birth that can serve as a how-to manual for achieving the best possible birth. Must read!
Husband-Coached Childbirth : The Bradley Method of Natural ChildbirthHusband-Coached Childbirth : The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth by Robert A. Bradley
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
I appreciated Bradley's observations of how animals give birth (OK, I'm a farm girl) and how that led to allowing women to birth naturally. Even if you don't specifically use the Bradley method with husband as "coach," this gives thorough, accurate information about what your body will be doing during birth so you are prepared. Must read.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better BirthThe Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer
Buy new: $10.37 / Used from: $6.51
Wonderful overview of birth choices with well-researched facts about each. Title says it all. Not specific to homebirth, though it left me knowing that was my choice. Good choice for the analytical parents-to-be.

This is a good read for anyone looking to make choices about their childbirth. Pros and cons of all aspects. While it definitely leans toward normal birth, it gives information good for anyone choosing any birth setting. Good starter book.
Gentle Birth ChoicesGentle Birth Choices by Barbara Harper
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $12.98
For women who want to take charge of their births. Reading this made me angry about how women in childbirth are treated in the U.S., yet empowered me to make choices that were gentle for me and my baby. Emphasizes a supportive environment. Discusses home and waterbirth.

Great intro for those new to learning about birth, including your birth location. Works for any birth environment. I recommend highly anything by the Sears. Again, not only for homebirth though.
Birth RebornBirth Reborn by Michel Odent
Buy used from: $147.97
Discusses how he helped women achieve safe births in France by respecting their bodies and their needs. It opened my eyes to what women need during birth and, also important, how interventions stand in the way.
Childbirth without Fear: The Principles and Practice of Natural Childbirth (Import)Childbirth without Fear: The Principles and Practice of Natural Childbirth (Import) by Grantly Dick-Read

Birth without Violence: Revised Edition of the ClassicBirth without Violence: Revised Edition of the Classic by Frédérick Leboyer M.D.
Buy new: $14.78 / Used from: $3.80
Ways to welcome the new person gently, without the violence of being thrust out under bright lights into a noisy, scary new world. He's the French doctor who put babies into a specially prepared bath after birth. While we didn't do the bath, we did resolve to treat our infant as a person from birth on. No pulling baby away for measurements and procedures, for starters!
Immaculate Deception II: Myth, Magic and BirthImmaculate Deception II: Myth, Magic and Birth by Suzanne Arms
Buy new: $17.21 / Used from: $5.60
Facts about birth that leave it to you to decide (and that will likely be that natural birth equals safe and normal). Not a homebirth how-to manual, but an overview of the medicalization of childbirth that may make firm your decision to birth normally. Beautiful photos.
The Home Birth AdvantageThe Home Birth Advantage by Mayer Eisenstein
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $11.80
The author is a homebirth doctor in the Chicago area. It's more of his own story, but it might be good to share with others in your life to help them see that homebirth may be right for you.
Choosing Waterbirth: Reclaiming the Sacred Power of BirthChoosing Waterbirth: Reclaiming the Sacred Power of Birth by Lakshmi Bertram
Buy used from: $5.19
One woman's story of her five births. I didn't know anyone who had birthed in water, so that's the part I felt I didn't know what to expect. The author describes waterbirth in detail so I felt fully prepared. Nice pictures. She's into yoga, so it also gives poses for pregnancy.
We Are All Water BabiesWe Are All Water Babies by Jessica Johnson
Buy used from: $10.49
Gorgeous book with breathtaking photos. It has a section about waterbirth. It's not really a how-to book, but it may inspire you to birth in water. Now if only I can get my husband to agree to fly me halfway around to world to birth in water with dolphins, as some in the book did!
Emergency Childbirth: A ManualEmergency Childbirth: A Manual by Gregory J. White
Buy used from: $31.19
I read this just so I could answer those silly people who asked, "But what if your midwife doesn't make it in time!?!?" It also reminded me to boil some shoelaces. ;)
Special DeliverySpecial Delivery by Rahima Baldwin
Buy used from: $14.95
I have not yet read, but others recommended this to me. "A comprehensive resource on prenatal care, labor, birth and postpartum care for mother and newborn. While directed towards home birth, it can be used by those choosing hospital birth who desire active, alert participation." (Some breastfeeding info is out of date.)
Children at BirthChildren at Birth by Marjie Hathaway
Buy used from: $25.90
I planned for my older child to attend the birth of her new baby sibling. This gave a good overview about how to decide if it's the right thing for your family and a plan to prepare the child for the birth. It was hard for me to find, but my librarian found it through interlibrary loan.
All the Places to LoveAll the Places to Love by Patricia Maclachlan
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $7.34
Extremely cute children's book. Features a homeborn baby on a farm. I cried all the way through it, especially when I learned the baby's name is the one we planned to give our daughters had either been a boy. Maybe the pregnancy hormones, but still.
Welcome With LoveWelcome With Love by Jenni Overend
Buy used from: $56.00
This is an accurate and cute childen's book about homebirth. It gives details about the birth and I used it to prepare my older child for the birth of her baby sibling. Those other new sibling books scared my daughter when they talked about Mommy going away to the hospital without the older children. I also recommend "Runa's Birth" by Uwe Spillman (not available on Amazon).

Silent Knife: Cesarean Prevention and Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC)Silent Knife: Cesarean Prevention and Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC) by Nancy Wainer Cohen
Buy new: $41.95 / Used from: $26.97
I'm including this one not because women contemplating homebirth don't already know unnecessary c-sections are so harmful, but because this book demonstrates the extreme. Reading this FIRMLY cemented my desire to give birth in a place where no one would even begin to think about putting the knife to me.
The Red TentThe Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
This won't do anything to prepare you for homebirth, but is a good read about Dinah from the Bible, who grew up to be a midwife. It's historical fiction told from the perspective of this daughter of Jacob, based on Genesis. My midwife gave it to me to read during my pregnancy since I was up all hours of the night to pee anyway.
Midwives (Oprah's Book Club)Midwives (Oprah's Book Club) by Chris Bohjalian
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
Don't read if pregnant! I read this fictional drama long before I had children because it was on Oprah’s list. The author did enough research about real midwives that it made me respect midwifery. It’s here because it is part of my history. But it’s FICTION with a made-up outcome. The freaky thing is the morning of my homebirth, I turned on the TV and the movie based on this book was on.
My Mother's Hymn BookMy Mother's Hymn Book by Johnny Cash
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $8.82
Only slightly irrelevant. My husband played this CD for me while I was laboring in the birth tub. I love it.
