Tadao Ando, 1941 in Japan geboren, gehört zu den ganz großen Architekten der Welt. Das Entwerfen erlernte er nicht auf einer Architekturschule, sondern erarbeitete es sich selbst auf Reisen in Afrika, Europa und den USA. 1970 begründete er sein Architekturbüro in Osaka. Der Pritzker-Preisträger wurde durch seine kontemplativen, erhabenen Räume berühmt: Kirche über dem Wasser auf Hokkaido, Kirche des Lichts in Osaka, Meditationsraum für die UNESCO in Paris. Wasser und Licht sind die zentralen Gestaltungsmittel dieses Architekten.
Das Buch zeigt eine Auswahl von 32 Bauten Andos, darunter ganz aktuelle Projekte wie die Fondation d’Art Contemporain François Pinault in Paris, das Calder Museum in Philadelphia, die Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis, das Teatro Armani in Mailand sowie das kürzlich eröffnete Museum für Moderne Kunst in Fort Worth, Texas, mit 15’000 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche. Der New Yorker Grafiker und Designer Massimo Vignelli hat dem Buch eine kongeniale Gestaltung verliehen.

Kenneth Frampton ist Architekturprofessor an der Columbia University in New York und hat viele Schriften zur Architektur vorgelegt, darunter Die Architektur der Moderne.

Tadao Ando is principal of the firm Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in Japan. In 1995, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Kenneth Frampton is the Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University.

The Light and Water book
This book mainly compromises of many pictures of Ando's works and some floor plans but overall its a great book to flip through and obtain information from the excerpts provided. The pictures taken are of high quality and its a pretty visually stimulating book. As an architect you'd see how the pictures relate the essence of light and water affect a building. Some of the images are very vivid whereby it jumps out at you and you could almost experience the space as if you were there but I wouldn't recommend this book if your looking for heavy information for research papers.
