Customer Reviews
Excellent knives!!
Even though I already own a very expensive set of Henckels knives, I purchased this Chicago Cutlery set for the convenience of extra knives. Chicago Cutlery was highly rated by Consumer Reports, which is why I decided to try the brand. You wouldn't expect inexpensive knives to be so good, but this set is really very impressive. These knives are a pleasure to use in the kitchen (I'm an avid cook) and were worth every penny. So if you don't want to spend several hundred dollars on top quality knives, Chicago Cutlery is definitely the way to go for good knives.
Surprising
I love knives. I love prepping foods, and there's just something about a sharp knife that makes you feel good. As such, I've done a lot of shopping around for a solid set of knives that don't break the bank. Obviously, that takes professional Henckels and Wusthoffs out of the running, leaving me with a few sub-$100 sets. I opted for this one.
The aesthetic factor is a 5. The shining uniform metal looks great and adds a charm to a kitchen, even one that's not stainless steel-themed. The accompanying block holds the knives well, with a small footprint and at easy reach.
But the only thing that really matters with a knife is comfort and sharpness. Comfort is overall a personal preference -- these knives had a solid feel to them, not overly heavy but at the same time not too light to offset balance. These knives can be used just as easily by a larger man and a smaller woman.
The steak knives worked well when I used them out of the box, but for some reason all the other knives were near-dull and had trouble slicing an apple. I was seriously concerned these knives weren't going to cut better than the Miracle Blades I replaced them with.
However, after toning them with the included sharpening steel, they became ridiculously sharp. Even with the large chef's knife, I can cut cucumbers razor thin.
Because I'm used to microserrations from the Miracle Blade, it's taken me awhile to get use to having to actually SLICE through something instead of SAWING through it. The ease of gliding through fruits and vegetables by just putting a little pressure and rocking the knife back and forth is something I never noticed I missed.
All in all, great knives, especially for the <$50 I bought them for. I also picked up the 7" Chicago Cutlery Santoku knife, which is just as impressive (after sharpening, that one came dull, as well!)
You'll be hard pressed to find a set of knives this expansive with this quality and price. Definitely a happy purchase.
Excellent set of knives
I got this set as a Christmas present, and it's the nicest set of knives I've had, I never sprang for a really good set before, and for the price, these were a bargain. They look very sleek, and while yes, they really should be handwashed, I don't mind if that keeps them looking nice. I havent used the sharpening implement, I'm a novice, so I'll most likely take them to be sharpened professionally.
They are attractive, work phenomenally well, and a great price.
