It's Like Working with PlayDoh!
My youngest daughters birthday is the first week of January and this year I decided to jump into the world of fondant and see what I could create. I bought 2 packages of fondant - one in primary colors for my other daughters cake and this one in neon for my second.
The fondant is divided by color in foil wrapped packages. When you take it out it feels a bit dry to the touch, like corn starch makes your fingers feel. It does tend to dry out rather quickly so you have to work with it immediately or keep it covered.
I rolled it out and it was similar to a cross between clay and play doh. Rolling it thin and even I was able to cut it into thin strips which I wrapped around pencils to make a curly-que shape and then bound some togeher and laid them on the counter to dry which I later used to make a 'bow' on the top of the cake with little curly-que's sticking out.
I then used more fondant to roll out thin like play doh and cut shapes to attach to the cake using a layer of frosting as the 'glue' to hold it in place. The pieces are pliable when fresh and bend and shift to fit the shape of the cake.
If you want to cover an entire cake you'll want to buy at least two packages. Although edible, we didn't find it palatable. A cross between thick paper and well, again, play-doh, it has a dry, leathery odd sweet taste that was ok if you had a lot of cake and frosting with the bite but wasn't especially 'good'. Mostly for looks, it makes a gorgeous cake but everyone but my youngest daughter placed the fondant to the side of the plate after a few bites.
Overall we loved the product and it makes for a beautiful and easy cake that looks as though you spent big bucks on it when in fact you made from scratch at home!
