Beautiful to Look At ... Just Don't Eat it
While I blessed with two daughter born 5 years apart, they also happen to have birthdays just 1 day apart, so every year I make two cakes. This year I invested in fondant and bought the primary color pack for my oldest. Based on her love of everything "British" and the "Union Jack" flag (which blue, red and white) and the fact that she was actually IN London, England on her 17th birthday (when I made this cake for her return) I loved the bright blue and red that it came with. Also in the package was yellow and green which I didn't use on this particular cake.
The fondant comes in 4 foil wrapped packs. Upon opening the package the fondant is a 'blob' similar to the clay you used to play with in grade school, although perhaps just a tad bit softener and much "drier". Since it dries out very quickly I broke off a portion and covered the rest with a damp paper towel. Rolling the fondant with a rolling pin did take a little muscle to get it rolled flat, but I found it easy to work with and fun to use.
Once flat I was able to cut it into strips to wrap around pencils to make 'curly' steamers and fatter curls were made to fashion into a fondant 'bow' on the top of the cake.
The fondant has almost no flavor but perhaps a leathery cornstarch sweet taste that isn't very palatable and reminded me of chewing thick paper. While I think it was lovely to look at, fun to work with and made an incredible looking cake, only my youngest daughter wanted to eat all her fondant on the cake, the rest of us tried it but ended up placing it to the side of our plates.
If you want to cover your entire cake with it you will first need to put a thin later of frosting down as 'glue' of sorts and then have a large amount of fondant rolled out completely even and thin and large enough to lay over the cake, smoothing the edges and top and cutting off the excess. You would most likely need 2 packages to do so.
In the end I would buy it again... it makes breathtakingly beautiful cakes and it's fun to work with if you've always enjoyed play-doh!
