Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
The author outlines an 18-step theory, for sewing any garment, that is intended to eliminate the need to consult direction sheets. The theory may work for the majority of garments, but many pattern direction sheets offer helpful hints for assembling the pieces peculiar to the specific garment. A better suggestion would be to use the author's method with the direction sheets. Nor is the theory flawless; for example, some of the instructions for putting in sleeves are inconsistent. Also, the book is incomplete in some areas; for example, there are no directions for putting in an invisible zipper. Nevertheless, the book has many good points; the large detailed illustrations are easy to follow and are accompanied by clear instructions. This would be a useful text for a beginning sewing class, and the experienced would find it a useful reference tool. Large public libraries may wish to buy, but smaller public libraries can skip. The Only Sewing Book You Need to Own5
There is no other book that will improve your sewing techniques like this one can. Each section shows the home seamstress how professionals approach garment construction. Every part of a garment is put together step by step, and the terrific drawings leave nothing in question. Instructions are easy to understand and straightforward even for the most difficult techniques. This book is a "must have" reference for anyone who sews!

Finally a method to this madness!5
Our school FIDM uses this book as a textbook and all out reference to sewing in the fashion industry. It has detailed step by step diagrams and explains each step. It shows you the easier way to achieving the results you want. I highly recommend this book if you are a beginner or just need a reference book.

Actually a little disappointed3
I bought this sewing guide looking for the advanced time-saving construction techniques used in the garment industry. Sadly, I didn't find them in this book, despite the glowing reviews. It is a good textbook and reference manual on basic sewing. The information is clearly presented with excellent and plentiful illustrations. However, the skills depicted are ones I mastered quite a while ago. I will keep this book in place of others in my library, but this was an expensive experiment. I would not recommend this book to anyone over an intermediate skill level.
