Decorative furniture, in Dewberry's viewpoint, means painting in the one- (or a few-) brushstroke technique--not the sponging, ragging, and stenciling that Jocasta Innes articulated. In fact, the entire how-to and project orientation here focuses on painting; there's nothing about preparation, stripping, and other preliminary methods needed for a clean, ready-to-decorate surface. Yet for fanciers of this traditional technique, the sky is virtually the limit of possibilities--10 projects show, from background to final varnish, the best effects of applying colorful flowers and fauna and displaying blue-and-white china atop chests of drawers, tables, trunks, and screens. Donna Dewberry is without doubt the most successful and well-known decorative painter ever. She has done nine books for North Light since 1998. She is contracted through 2007 with PBS stations nationwide for her program “One-Stroke Painting with Donna Dewberry” and is also a regular presenter on the Home Shopping Network. Her designs are licensed for home décor fabrics, wallpapers, borders, stick-ons, bedding, etc. Donna’s most recent North Light books are Donna Dewberry’s Designs for Entertaining (2006) and Painting Fabulous Flowers with Donna Dewberry (2006).

Just wonderful!
Donna Dewberry is an amazing artist who shows you step by step how to create beautiful decorations on furniture in your home. Decorative Furniture was written with the beginner painter in mind. Everything is made simple, and it starts from square one.

Decorative Furniture starts out by showing you what materials you will need to complete every project in the book. Amazingly, it isn't a huge list of materials. Donna Dewberry strives for simple, yet extraordinary projects. She also shows you what brushes are needed and how to load them with paint.

This book also covers basic one-stroke painting techniques, such as how to make a vine, leaf, or flower. Even if you already know the one-stroke painting techniques, this serves as a very useful reminder of how things should look.

My favorite part of this book is how it teaches you how to do special effects such as giving a piece a textured look, such as the project on page 32. I plan to start this one soon!

As with all Donna Dewberry's books, don't feel that the projects are only for furniture. You really can use the same techniques, and patterns on nearly anything you wish to paint!
