Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Designer McClintock invites readers into her elegantly appointed Victorian home in this lavish, photo-packed book. Emphasizing classic styles (with a serious soft spot for the ornate details of 18th century European design), McClintock's home exemplifies her take on "romantic decorating." Ostensibly a practical guide to romanticizing one's surroundings, this book is little more than a detailed tour of McLintock's home. McClintock clearly and patiently describes her aesthetic, covering everything from fabric choices and paint colors to doorknobs and switch plates. What she lacks in practicality (the topic of kitchen storage is limited to a handful of paragraphs while table settings receives the multi-page treatment), McClintock generally makes up for in the sheer number of her ideas. Cognizant of the fact that few readers will be able to match her lavish lifestyle, McClintock offers tips on acquiring pieces at antique shops, estate sales and other bargain sources. Though the book falls short as a practical how-to, fans of McClintock's aesthetic will appreciate the opportunity to see her warm and stylishly appointed home.

From Booklist
It's not every day that celebrities throw their homes open to more than high-style interior design magazines. Here, almost every inch of fashion designer McClintock's 1889 San Francisco Victorian residence is available for scrutiny, from her parquet floors to the hand-crafted baldachin canopy beds. She is true to her business design and personal style; it is clear from the meticulous attention to the narrative and the elaborate vocabulary sidebars that romance with a capital R defines her life. All the foundations to realize this kind of elegance are well explained: different periods, typical decorative touches, soft furnishings, textile choices, even the most appropriate vines and trailing plants to select. Offered are more than 15 do-it-yourself projects, such as painted-glazed walls, etched windows, fringed throw pillows, and gilded side tables. Jacobs, Barbara

Upscale decorating Jessica McClintock Style
This book is more a coffee table book, than a "how-to" decorating book.
The reason I say this is because the photos (though amazing) are like magazine photos of Jessica's upscale home.
A person would have to be very rich and also live in a large Victorian mansion to be able to even remotely duplicate some of the details in this book. But as I said, this is mostly a coffee table book, therefore, if you want to take a peek inside Jessica's home, then you will like this book. But unless you inherited an "English-Style" mansion and tons of money, then the ideas could be hard to put together by the average person.
The Jessica McClintock Style is very romantic and "female-style". I think that most people that have followed her career would know what style I'm talking about.
However, if you are unfamiliar with Jessica's style, then I can describe this book as having the following:
1) Muted colors (ie: cream, ochre, tan ,ivory, with lost of gold filligree, worn tapestries, light colored damask and toile, and of course, lots of antique lace);
2) A combination English and French style decorating;
3) Some "shabby chic" inspired pieces [especially in her kitchen];
4) A less masculine approach to decorating, or rather, a "female approach to decorating".
VERY ROMANTIC
Jessica McClintock's Victorian home in San Francisco is a reflection of her Romantic style as a fashion designer. No one can argue that her charming home is beautifully decorated but I found that all the rooms pretty much looked the same. She favors monochromatic color schemes and personally I found the rooms boring after a while when you see the same color scheme page after page. But regardless, the book is beautifully illustrated and she gives tips throughout the book as well as additional information in the back of the book on how to create a Romantic look.
Jessica Mcclintock's Simply Romantic Decorating
Fantastic book. I loved every page. I incorporated her designs and
techniques into my new house. Absolutely love her style.
