I love it! I love it! I love it!
My Wal*Mart is no longer stocking candle making stuff, so they've put it all on clearance. This is one of the items that they had on clearance, and on a lark, we bought it. Candle making is always something I wanted to get into, but since space and money is tight in my house, this was a kind of last attempt at this particular hobby.
Now, I've had this gadget for 24 hours almost, and I've made 3 candles, and I'm working on my first set of votives. This is the most user friendly candle making craft I've ever seen, and I'm infinitely glad I got this gizmo which, truly does, work as easily as the box makes it out to work. Within half an hour of getting this home, I was making candles. All you have to do is some light assembly, plug it in, and follow the instructions. Voila!
This really comes with everything you need... A pound of blue wax granules, a pillar candle cast, a stopper, wicks. All you do is pour it in the hopper, turn on the heat, wait 5 minutes, stir the wax, wait another 5 minutes, and pour. About an hour later, you do a second pour to fill in the dip in the middle of the candle, then you let it set overnight. In 12 hours, you have a store-quality candle. It's really quite amazing.
I was worried that it'd be impossible to get the candle out of the mold, and I was worried that cleaning the hopper would be a nightmare. Neither proved true. The candles come free of the little mold with a good rap on the countertop (if a good rap doesn't cut it, throw it in the freezer for about 30 minutes and try again... It'll slide right out), and the hopper is easily wiped clean (as long as you do it immediately after you're finished pouring... If you don't wipe it, don't sweat it, it'll still work and it won't gunk up your next candle). The only big problem I've found is, apparently, a problem for most candle makers, is a well sinks around the wick after it cools. This is easily corrected with a second pouring. With practice, you'll turn out perfect candles. :)
Some tips for people who're making candles with this gizmo... if you melt too much wax and you still have some left over after your second pouring, use an empty, small, ice cube tray and fill up some of the ice cubes with the extra wax. Use those cubes of wax to make those fancy candles with the different colored squares in them. Also, if you're going to add herbs into the candles, add them directly into the mold, not the hopper. Add fragrance right before you pour. Also, expect you'll have to do re-pours, so save yourself some wax. Threading the wick can be a trick, so tie the end of the wick with dental floss and use that to pull the wick through the hole. I found it was much easier to secure the wick to the metal pick over the top of the candle, then plug the hole as opposed to plugging the hole then tying the pick (don't worry, when you get it, you'll know what I'm talking about).
Anyway, if you like candlemaking, you NEED this !
Reuse your existing wax!
My daughter (age 11) received this for her birthday. It is a great gift for a crafty pre-teen with adult supervision. She has made about 15 candles with it. It didn't come with very much wax at all, and the first candle we made we had to dig out of the mold. After our first attempt, we discovered that freezing the candle helped it slip right out. We also started remelting ruined candles laying around the house and rebuilding them. It was lots of fun for her and she even made most of her christmas gifts this year. I would definitely recommend this kit, just be prepared to buy more wax. (Dollar store candles make a cheap source for wax!)
Not as easy as it sounds
I bought the machine plus an additional set of molds. I used the smallest mold (a small cylinder/pillar) so my test run wouldn't waste all the wax in the set (it only comes with one bag, one color - in my case yellow, but you have no way of knowing which color your set comes with). I agree with the earlier review in regards to the center of the candle settling (you get a dip in the middle) but the accompanying paperwork says this will happen with this machine and to melt more wax and add it to fill the indented area.
I do not agree with the reviewer on how easy the candle releases. I tried for TWO DAYS to get it out and couldn't. I followed the directions, "GENTLY" (all caps) tapped it on a counter but it did not come out. I followed the directions and "gently" tugged on the wick holder, and it did not come out. I tugged a bit harder on the wick holder... and the wick broke off! I finally felt I had no choice but to DIG (carve) the wax out of the mold and buy some wax release spray for my next attempt. When my husband saw me doing this, he (being a brawny guy, not one to follow directions) took the mold we were supposed to be gentle with and BANGED the heck out of it on a table. After SEVERAL hard whacks, it finally released. I can tell you I would not have the strength to do what he did - and you shouldn't have to beat the heck out of something to do a "simple" craft.
One other thing I was disappointed about was the inaccuracy of the mold descriptions. After buying the kit and the add-on mold package, I wanted to check their order form for which molds I already had and buy the ones I didn't have... but the mold dimensions are wrong so I wasn't sure which of the pillars I have and which I don't because they both matched on half the dimensions but neither matched what I had in front of me (even the drawings were off). I tried to judge it using both the candle size the mold makes and the total mold size (there's a section beneath the mold, sort of an attached stand) but the dimensions weren't close either way.
As for the wax colors, I received yellow, someone else received blue, I'm assuming they also have some kits with red, but it doesn't say anything about making different colors. They don't sell pink, orange, or other colors like light green, light brown, etc. (they have dark green and "coffee" brown) so you'd have to figure out how to make those colors or skip them all together.
I'm going to give it another chance (since returning it will be a pain). I guess I'll have to do it when my husband's near... or take some muscle-building classes.
