If you can only get 1 plush penguin, go with the baby penguin; it is more likely to be the favorite.

With the finger puppet, there's less plush for the child to hug, but it's no less cute. My daughter actually has all 4 penguins: the adult and baby puppets, and the adult and baby finger puppets. She plays with all 4 of them very frequently.

A documentary-style movie, yet successfully entertained my daughter when she was 5 years old (and continues to do so). This movie was what got her fascinated with penguins in the first place.

Not only are these rhymes fun and funny, but they also reinforce what's been learned about: 1) the penguin's life cycle (e.g., "A Hatchling's Song," "My Father's Feet," "I Am Looking for My Mother," "Penguin's First Swim,") 2) their habitat and diet (e.g., "Antarctic Anthem," "Diary of a Very Short Winter Day," "Regurgitate") 3) predators of penguins ("Predator Riddles")

Follows the life cycle of an emperor penguin using illustrations and large font. As with most book from this series, it focuses on one science question, explaining it quite thoroughly for the intended age group. As the illustrations are balanced with the amount of text (i.e., not too many words crammed onto one page), these are able to hold a young reader's interest to the very last page.

A read-aloud favorite in our family.
