Great 80's dance hits!!!!
I seen this band three times in the eighties, twice they opened up for Depeche Mode and once on a solo tour. They only have 2 CD's to my knowledge, this one is the best. Every song has a good vibe, I listen to it when I ride the treadmill.
When I got it in the mail, the first thing I did was go to the basement and pull out my old vinyl records. I forgot I have all of the extended versions of the singles from the album.
If Book of Love is reading this, make a new CD I will be first in line to buy it and dont forget to tour, I will be in the front row!!!
still sounds great
i listened to this album several times this week for the for time in years. i'm ashamed to admit i'd forgotten how brilliant (and underappreciated) book of love is. let's face it, a lot of synth-pop doesn't age well. book of love, however, suprising, still sounds pretty darn good. it's a tribute to both the production and the sheer quality of the songs.
the album's highlights are pretty obvious: 'boy,' 'i touch roses,' 'modigliani,' 'book of love,' 'you make me feel so good.' ted ottaviano wrote some timeless tracks. some people might be quick to dismiss it as bubblegum pop, or a second-rate yazoo, or third or fourth rate DM, but that's not true at all. book of love dealt with heady subjects but wrapped them up in bright, shiny melodies.
susan ottaviano's dead-pan vocal delivery is quite charming and is a nice counterpoint to ted's sometimes sunny soundscapes. were she to sing any differently, the songs might've gotten away from the band. and while there's often a lot going on with these songs musically, they're deceptively simple in their construction. that's not a slam at all, rather it's a compliment. ted & co. proved you don't have to have 18 tracks, layers and layers of strings, brass, and lord-knows-what-else to make a great pop song. all you really need are a few chords, a great beat and a great melody. few bands understood this as well as book of love did, and they were a better band for it.
i wouldn't say it's 'essential' listening, but if you've not heard it, i highly recommend you do. for 10 bones you certainly could do a lot worse, but you probably couldn't do any better. a great album by a great (and sadly forgotten) band.
Great 80s dance
Book of Love never got the credit they deserved during the 80s. This album, their first and best, was packed end to end with dance hits. "Still Angry" and "White Lies" are unhappy but still danceable. Like many of the best 80s albums, the first 12 songs fit together to make a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. The Remixes added to the CD are a great addition. I paid more for the 12 inch singles of these than you pay for the entire album today! If you are new to Book of Love, you will likely recognize many of these songs because they have been used in numerous movies. I have loved this album since I first heard it and I even saw them in concert once. Their music still makes me happy today. If you like 80s "NuWave" alternative, buy this album.
