On an initial listen to Pass out of Existence, Chimaira sometimes bear the hallmarks of being little more than a copycat band following along in the scorched-earth wake of the mighty Slipknot. Still, there's much evidence that Chimaira have arrived at this point as much through innovation as imitation. The six-man metal crew's debut is built around a bludgeoning old-school thrash-metal dynamic, jackhammer drumming, primal-scream lyrics, and brutally applied electronic loops. "Dead Inside" marries its powerhouse chorus to spacious, Tool-like passages and bursts of industrial wizardry, while the sinister "Abeo" proves that for all Chimaira's passion for extreme metal, they're far more than one-trick ponies. Slipknot fans will find much to enjoy here, notably the supertight, percussion-heavy "Painting the White to Grey" and the epic, tortured 12-minute closer, "Jade." --Louis Pattison

Awesome, heavy, and actually original debut.
Although there are no other reviewers who think this way, "Pass Out of Existence" is actually far superior to the also quite good follow-up "Impossibility of Reason". This album showcases many original and stand-out songs, whereas IOR sounds pretty much the same the whole way through, and loses some of the singing, electronics and creativity this had. While IOR was similar to Slayer, I can think of no band that sounds like this, though nothing on it is entirely original. Chimaira's lyrics in general are nothing too special, and follow the usual nu-metal pattern, but there are some exceptions. Here's what I think-

1) Let Go (8/10) A very good song, and the samples are great, especially in the chorus. When I first popped this into my CD player and heard this, I was mildly impressed, but I then came to realize that the real value in the album comes later.

2) Dead Inside (9/10) Much better than "Let go". Creepy mood caused by samples, but it falls short of being a favorite due to boring lyrics.

3) Severed (10/10) This is really heavy, and the verses would make one hell of a mosh pit. The screaming does get a little old by the end, though, and it goes a little too long.

4) Lumps (9/10) Screeching keyboards and double-bass drums at the beginning. Great. There's a part before the chorus that features a riff not unlike that from Slipknot's "Prosthetics". The song in general doesn't sound like them though. Love the "I was so, I was so, I was so, I was so ASHAMED!" thing.

5) Pass Out of Existence. (10/10) Opens with a scream that shows you it will be a heavy track. Bass drums are a little crazy and unnecessary. There's some train sound FX and a mellow part near the end that is a pleasant surprise. This CD doesn't feature too much melody as far as the vocals go.

6) Abeo (9/10) Very cool, short guitar and drum intrumental. Very original and creepy. Whispering in the background.

7) Sp Lit (8/10) The verses aren't very good, but I like the funny puking sample they keep playing. Great melodic chorus. May have been a single, though I don't know why. It would actually be my last pick.

8) Painting the White to Grey (11/10) Really heavy older song originally recorded for This Present Darkness. One of the best on the album. The bridge has some really good lyrics about being in the back of puppeteer ballrooms and trying to die and stuff. Really good. Just rocks.

9) Taste My... (11/10) Best melody on the whole album. The chorus has some great singing with some voices in the back saying "You taste my, you taste my tear on your face." One of the best.

10) Rizzo (11/10) Scary, blasting loud, and scream-filled. Really good song. I noticed there's someone named Rizzo on their thank-you list. Maybe it's about them, although from the lyrics in this song I'd say that if it was, they wouldn't thanking them.

11) Sphere (30/10) BEST CHIMAIRA SONG EVER!!!!!! Creepy song with the most ingenious lyrics they have ever come up with. Deals with falling in love with someone that you can never be with, and being so obsessed with them. "Wanting each other more than life". Also, there's no verse-chorus-verse song structure, the song kind of tells a story. It was on This Present Darkness too, but it wasn't as good 'cuz the keyboards and samples make it scarier.

12) Forced Life (10/10) Another great rocker that shows anger toward an ex.

13) Options (9/10) Pretty good, features some Godsmack-like singing in the chorus, and although they suck, this song doesn't.

14) Jade (12/10) Original and epic 13 minute closer. This song is brilliant, and it's so much better than "Implements of Destruction" off of IOR. The first half is a rocking song with the usual theme of anger toward an ex, only mixed with some strange egyptianish mood and something about eyes turning to jade. The next quarter is some guitar feed back. It then finishes off with a creepy, hopeless sounding electronic beat and some final whispered lyrics that make the song a million times better.

A must have for any metal fan. IOR is also worth getting.

Amazing Work of Depressing Poetry
When I bought this cd, I had no idea who Chimaira was, except for a few samples of songs here on Amazon.com. I put this in and I can honestly say that not a day goes by without me listening to this cd, it is that amazing. Almost every song is perfectly made and is brutal when it needs to be but does not overdo it as many bands such as Premonitions of War do. There were a few flaws on this cd, and they were: 1)song #6-Abeo. it is completly unnecessary and takes away from the flow of the album. 2)the sudden change to singing in #5-Pass Out Of Existance could have been better transitioned or not put in at all. the 3rd and biggest flaw is Jade. that song had the possibility of being the best song on the cd but Chimaira destroyed it. instead of sticking to their roots with this song, they tried to make it into a electronics show and ended up with an annoying song. there is a 2:30 min intro where the lyrics do not even start until 2:15 sec in, and then its just the same three words over and over again. after about minute 4 you can turn the song off because the interum between these lyrics and the next lyrics is 8 min of horribly annoying repetive electronics and then when the lyrics start again, its a woman whispering into the mike...horibble. however, except for these three flaws, the rest of the album is amazing.

I recommened that everyone buy this cd and support this group, they are amazing!

Not a terrible cd, but not a good one either, this one comes right in between it....5/10. This is brutal in places, nu-metal in others, which bugs me cuz I hate nu-metal vocals.
Songs like Severed, Lumps, Dead Inside and Split are just brutal as hell, awesome double bass, fast guitars and raging vocals. Some of the rest were good, but half of it just don't cut it, therefore I give it a halfway rating. There's potential in this music....Check out their debut EP Stairway to Hell for absolute brutality and check out their newest one Impossibility of Reason for a major improvement.

The band is ok, the drummer is awesome, quick double bass, the guitarists are ok, they are fast, but not much in the way of shredding. I think there's one solo on the whole album. Some of the riffs are sick though. The vocals are sometimes way too nu-metal but in others, there are very brutal, almost death metal especially the awesome end to Dead Inside, the best track on the album where some awesome screams and even a death growl is laid to tape. The bass is what makes this cd heavy and the samples are ok, but get annoying sometimes.

Their 1st one is much rawer their new one is more talented. Not recommended too much, unless you're a huge fan, but there are some great songs on here, get their others though, they're great.
