Editorial Reviews

Album Description
The San Diego-based combo's eagerly anticipated new album The Best Little Secrets Are Kept is a uniquely magnificent collection that's truly fit for a king. The brainchild of musician/producer Jason Hill along with Brian Karscig, Mark Maigaard, & Jimmy Armbrust, Louis XIV have already drawn acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic with their inventive melange of royally raucous riffs and big bawdy beats. *Parental Advisory for Artwork Only-Not for Musical Content*

For a hip, modern boy, Louis XIV's Jason Hill has plenty of old school rock star attitude. On his San Diego trio's debut album he declares himself a "weapon of mass destruction" and then backs it up with salacious come-ons meant to offend as they intrigue ("I know you want a strangle / Or a mouthful of gasoline / Or to be tied up and stoned"). Lyrical allusions to T. Rex and the Kinks tell only part of Louis XIV's actual musical journey. Hill may fancy Marc Bolan and Ray Davies as elegant dandies, and occasionally borrow their lightweight shuffles to great effect. However, his own proper terrain is the thorny inquisition of the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Here, his band throttles in kind, motoring a cantankerous rhythm section that's every bit as vicious as fellow modern day malcontents the Libertines or White Stripes. --Jaan Uhelszki

Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll3
This album is absolutely infectious, extremely british, and really enjoyable...the first few listens. After awhile though, I find myself easily bored by a lot of the tunes, with a few exceptions. On top of that, if you're easily offended, especially by derogatory sexual treatment of women, you might want to pass on this one. For me, I dug the album because of the clever arrangements and vocals and deviation from your standard whiny rock. The guys in Louis XIV appear to be having a ridiculously fun time, especially on tunes like "Illegal Tender" where they practically dissolve into laughter.

The main standouts for me include the big single "God Killed The Queen" and the first song I ever heard by the group - the cheeky yet cutesy "Pledge of Allegiance". That's not to say the other tunes aren't worth a listen, overall this is definitely a fun listening experience from start to finish and worth a few plays, but the arrogance and swagger you get from first playing it wears off after awhile.

Recommend for fans of bands like the Kaiser Chiefs or Artic Monkeys - be prepared for a few more gallons of sexually driven lyrics than those groups though!

Singing about sex is great again5
God bless you, Louis XIV, for this sublime rock and roll record. I love your electric guitars!

The most fun you could have with your pants on/or off5
Louis is the best little secret out there in the rock world. I pretty much agree with all the above reviews. It was the funnest CD since Eagles of Death Metal's Death by Sexy. I just found out about this band weeks ago, either from amazon's comparisons or slacker.com, can't remember. Don't matter. I'm just glad I found them, since I was drowning in a sea of pop crap on the regular radio. These fake brits are a breath of fresh air, making me want to get as naked as the girl on the cover.
