The Sentinel Of US Power Metal Continues With Crescent Shield
for those of you familiar with traditional heavy and melodic metal of the good ol' usa, the name micheal grant may ring a bell. the man set the stage for traditional metal during his time with the band legend maker, refocused the power metal spotlight again during his 2 albums with guitarist extraordinaire toby knapp in onward, and finally reawakens in this new project crescent shield. the album is upbeat, slightly "doomy" in subject matter but also uptempo with plenty of fast sections and crunchy guitar parts. some beautiful acoustic interludes are thrown in as well. the theme for the bands music ofcourse is a nobrainer given the title of the album and the postapacalytptic coverart. overall crescent shield bears a similair resemblance to onward's style of metal. with one listen i originally thought it was just another 80's Fates Warning style rehashing. but suprisingly the music actually has a "fresh" modern sounding characteristic to it. and michael grant's unique voice tone and unique range fits the music well. overall crescent shield leaves a few things to be desired production wise and therefore isn't 5 stars but well worth a buy if you are looking to put Europe aside for the time being and reaquainte yourself with some pretty damn good US powermetal. give this CD at least 2 spins and you will see what i mean.
