Customer Reviews
better than expected, but if you've never heard it....it may not be what you expect
i discovered this band on victory records' site and listened to them and liked them. i'm glad that i can finally listen to them wherever i go instead of just online. the album is great from start to finish, although 2 of the 13 tracks are little instrumental pieces done on keyboard and samplers. a few of the songs are older songs that they redid for the album (the artist, life like movies, cowboys and indians, and i think 1 or 2 others.) the new tracks like "we are your own" and "your time to shine" are amazing. the whole cd is amazing. the only thing that i wasn't too into was that it sounds like they made the version of "walk the plank" for this album a little softer, but it still sounds amazing.
for those of you that have ever seen an add for the cd in a magazine, or the sticker on the cover....disregard what it says. it says that this cd is perfect for fans of the killers, panic at the disco, and thursday. the only relation to the killers or panic at the disco, is the sometimes dancey keyboards. i think the only relation to thursday is the "emo" sound. plus it was produced by sal villanueva who also produced thursday's full collapse. if anything, they remind me a little of chiodos (with alot less screaming), a little of saosin, a little of scary kids scaring kids, and a little of sparta.
basically....if you're curious, go to their myspace or purevolume and listen to them. they're great in my opinion. it's definitely one of my favorite releases from victory records and one of my favorite releases of the year
Not worth buying.
Lip rings, hoodies, pleading vocals, and anthemic choruses are the perfect makings for a band in the modern hardcore scene. Fortunately, Driver Side Impact they have all those characteristics. Unfortunately, you probably would not be able to differentiate this band from any of the other 23536363 hardcore bands on Myspace.
The Very Air We Breathe desperately attempts to deviate from the hardcore format by throwing in electronic elements; however, this just comes across as confusing. What's worse is that the electronic experimentation does not keep this album from being extremely formulaic and monotonous. The bizarre electro drum kicks and sparse keyboard melodies were probably best kept off the album. Vocalist Branden Langhais' sounds eerily (and ironically) reminiscent of label mate Geoff Rickly of the successful emo/screamo outfit Thursday. (On high notes he conjures AFI's Davey Havok.) Instrumentally, the band fails to step up to the plate; lacking intricate guitar lines and vocal harmonies found in the music of their peers. One can only hope that since this is their debut album that they will improve next time around.
Poor Hooks, Even Worse Live
I've listened to their hits for this album, and I have to say that they're nothing special. They create a dancy, electronicy groove with some drawn out melody lines. Geez, that doesn't sound familiar. Oh wait, that's only every other pop rock alternative band that thought adding a keyboard to the mix would really "set them apart" from other bands.
Beside the album, I've had the displeasure of performing with this band on 2 accounts and believe me when I say this, but I have no idea how they are still a part of Victory Records. The music lacks the intensity that it may portray on the album and the lead vocalist can't even hit his own recorded melodies. It's pathetic.
I burned this album off a friend in order to listen and put the unfairness of life into better perspective for the band I'm in.
After listening, I realized, yes, life is very unfair.
