Engel have caused a stir among the media even before the release of Absolute Design , their debut album. Readers of Metal Hammer UK voted Engel one of the Top Unsigned Bands of 2006 and the Germany s biggest metal magazine, Rock Hard, announced them winners of its demo contest in the same year. Songwriter and guitarist Niclas Engelin says the debut album consists of simply good music. It s definitely about metal, but the diversity of the tracks allows no detailed generic term. Absolute Design was recorded and mixed by Anders Fridén, vocalist of Swedish metal institution, In Flames. Fridén was supported by Daniel Bergstrand, who has also worked for acts such as In Flames and Meshuggah. In other words, they are an illustrious team who went about their business with great skill and enthusiasm.

Nothing New but Infectiously Perfect
I am an avid fan of the Scandinavian metal scene and randomly came across Engel several months back. I ordered the cd in July and it has yet to leave my car stereo. While the formula of harsh/heavy verses combines with monumental and clean choruses, there is something about Engel "Absolute Design" that stands out above other similar artists.
There are few moments during the album where the music is anything overly complicated and advanced but the entire album is tasteful and well-written. Definitely the core of this album is its choruses which are epic, huge and some of the most unforgettable I have ever heard. Engel is a band that will probably fizzle in another album or so seeing that they have a pretty great debut to follow. I love this album and while its lack of distinct originality prevents it from being anything life changing or influential however, it is an album where I, personally, find myself saying "I love this song." with every track.
I would highly recommend this cd to fans of:
Soilwork (Post-Natural Born Chaos)
One Way Mirror
In Flames (Post-Soundtrack to your Escape)
The Defaced
Fans of Evergrey
If you are a fan of Evergrey then I would suggest you pick it up. One of the ex-members of Evergrey is in this band. Songs are good and I would love to see them perform this live.
