Review
This trio plays old-school hill country and Delta blues, even though the members range in age from 26 to 33. There's a satisfying mix of acoustic and electric numbers, and when the band plugs in, sometimes it veers off into '50s Chicago-style blues.
Although the sound covers most of the blues bases, geographically the group hails from the non-blues hotbed of Kansas. (The title, 1861, refers to the year Kansas became a state.)
Guitarist Aaron Moreland, who plays everything from the National steel to ''cigar box guitars,'' and gritty vocalist and harmonica player Dustin Arbuckle share writing duties, with Brad Horner supplying the requisite primitive beats.
The well-chosen covers include Hound Dog Taylor's ''Gonna Send You Back to Georgia'' and R.L. Burnside's ''See My Jumper'' and the Moreland-Arbuckle originals share the raw energy of Burnside and Junior Kimbrough's music. The band sometimes rocks out like the North Mississippi Allstars, another obvious influence. It's yet another fine signing for Northern Blues --Chicago Sun Times

Traditional blues... with a twist!
I can definitely say that this is a great blues album. Do not you expect flashing guitar solos or other pyrotechnics, this CD is a matter of a fantastic blues "groove" more than anything else. I never heard about this band before and I bought this CD just for a chance. I am glad I did, for sure this is going to be one of my best purchase of 2008. I have been captured from the very first note of the opening song that in some way reminds me the sound of the great Hound Dog Taylor and I cannot stop listening to it. The sound of the band is in one way very close to the old school of traditional delta blues however on the other hand very modern, difficult to describe in words you just have to listening to it. It is a real pleasure to discover that in the blues business there are still bands able to distinguish them self with an original sound and style. I would suggest this to everyone who love the blues, you will not be disappointed.
