Sacrificial Offering to the Kingdom of Heaven in aSacrificial Offering to the Kingdom of Heaven in a by Bethlehem
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $14.23
I just could not keep this on my top 40 since it was a re-record. I have seen alot of negative reviews on this one. Most of the complaints happen to be on how strange the vocals are. Isn't Suicidal Black Metal supposed to have crazy vocals?!?! I simply love this disc and the vocal performance on it. Kvarforth was a great addition to an already legendary band.
Memoria Vetusta II/Dialogue with the StarsMemoria Vetusta II/Dialogue with the Stars by Blut Aus Nord
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $9.92
Another Black Metal album that will be a must buy in 2009. Have not heard any tracks off of this yet but if it is anything thing like their last album "The Work Which Transforms God" it will be a top 40 album for sure
Inactive TheocracyInactive Theocracy by Reverence
Buy new: $29.49
Industrial Black Metal from France. I really enjoyed there take of the Silent Hill atmosphere but did not care for the clean vocals. If they would have used the harsher vocals more frequently then this album might have made the top 40.
DefianceDefiance by Destroyer 666
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $8.99
These guys need no introduction. Blackened Thrash like it was meant to be played.
VI/KlagopsalmerVI/Klagopsalmer by Shining
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $16.20
Shining's 2007 release V. Halmstad was a remarkable Depressive Black Metal album. Once I heard they were ready to release their new studio album I had my doubts if they could top it. From what I have heard they where not able to top it in my opinion. What they did do though was increased the intensity quite a bit which was nice to hear.
Beasts Among SheepBeasts Among Sheep by Javelina
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.98
The Sludge/Stoner Metal genre has always been hit or miss for me. I really dig the riffing that usually comes along with the genre but hate how they usually could care less how the vocals sound. For me this album and band give me the best of both worlds.
Death Concecrates with BloodDeath Concecrates with Blood by Unlight
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $14.86
Still listening to "Panzer Division Marduk" and wishing they would release another album like it? Well look no further than Unlight's new album "Death Concecrates with Blood". This album is straight forward blistering Black Metal that will burn your flesh clean off. Check it out!
Death ObsessionDeath Obsession by Brown Jenkins
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $12.14
My first Brown Jenkins and from the sounds of it their final release as a band. Their sound is very dark and distored which is a plus when it comes to Black Metal. The vocals almost have more of a Death Metal feel to them which just adds another layer of darkness to the album. I will be picking up their earlier release for sure.
Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem TrahuntQuantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt by Gorgoroth
Buy new: $13.99
This album did not grab my attention like I had hoped. It definitely has that old school vide to it, which helps but I still can't find a reason to keep coming back for more.
Process of a New DeclineProcess of a New Decline by Gorod
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $17.75
Gorod for those of you who are not familiar with them are a Technical Death Metal band from France. Technical Death Metal is not usually a sub-genre that I pay too much attention to since I am an old school type of guy but these guys are actually pretty good.
Homage to MartyrsHomage to Martyrs by Razor of Occam
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.75
Debut release from Blackened Thrash band Razor of Occam. Knowing that two members are also from Destroyer 666 should make this album a must buy for many metalheads.
Opus RibcageOpus Ribcage
Buy new: $8.99
Old School Swedish Death Metal. Great riffing, great vocals and that awesome signature Buzzsaw guitar tone make this ablum a must buy.
AbsuAbsu by Absu
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $15.02
Thrashing Black Metal heavyweights reunite and relese a very solid album. Nothing that is going to shake up the genre but still an album that shows why they have the status they do.
OrcustusOrcustus by Orcustus
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.98
Norwegian Black Metal - no more, no less. Fast, violent and worth the money if your enjoy the genre. It is by far not going to be the best Black Metal album of the year but it is a great representation of the genre.
Awakening of the GodsAwakening of the Gods
Buy new: $8.98
2009 will be a year to remember with all these Old School Death Metal bands deciding to reunite and release new material. Seance is the first band out of the gates and they have released one hell of an album. Kick butt Swedish Death Metal filled with killer solo's and plenty of Death Metal goodness.
All Reflections DrainedAll Reflections Drained by Xasthur
Buy new: $44.99
2009 release from Depressive Black Metal solo project Xasthur. Not a huge fan of his earlier stuff but always willing to check out new Black Metal releases.
Celestial DecayCelestial Decay
Buy new: $8.99
Yet another run of the mill Symphonic Black Metal album. Don't get me wrong, when done correctly this sub-grenre can produce some great music but I just did not hear it in this album. Worth a shot if you enjoy Symphonic Black Metal.
Breathing the FireBreathing the Fire by Skeletonwitch
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.45
With a debut album like Beyond The Permafrost how could you not be excited to hear their sophomore album.
VorunahVorunah by Sarke
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $12.50
Solo project of Sarke who has been apart of such bands as: Tulus, Khold and Old Man's Child. Sarke performs all the instruments while Nocturno Culto performs Vocal duties. From the single sample they have on their Myspace page it sounds like an old school Black N Roll album not too far off of Darkthrone's recent output.
Black CascadeBlack Cascade by Wolves in the Throne Room
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.95
At first I was glad that these guys did away with there Post Metal side but after listening to this release I realized that their Post Metal side was the only thing keeping them half way interesting. I may need to spend some more time with this one.
Marching Towards DestructionMarching Towards Destruction
Buy new: $8.91
Good Old Swedish Death Metal. Nothing new to the genre but still worth a listen.
AboveAbove by Samael
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.07
Maybe it was because they made such a drastic change back to Black Metal. This album sounds like a band that has been playing Black Metal their whole career and we all know that is not the case with Samael. The songs don't have their own identity which just kills the album after the first 2 songs. Too bad.
Slaves to the DecaySlaves to the Decay by Ugly
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $32.36
I don't own the album yet but after listening to their new tracks on Myspace I will definately have to pick up this release. They play Thrashing Black Metal but what sets them apart is the vocal work along with the songwriting. Black Metal vocals that are actually audible are hard to come by and these are top notch. Can't wait to grab this album!!
PhoenixPhoenix by Agathodaimon
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $8.99
2009 album from Symphonic Black Metalers Agathodaimon
Shadows of LengShadows of Leng by Tyrann
Buy new: $22.98
If you found out that two former members of the immortal Norwegian Black Metal band "Tsjuder" had started a side project, wouldn't you be interested in checking them out? Well here it is folks! Former guitarist and drummer from Tsjuder are now playing in Tyrann. They play the same old school Thrashing Black Metal that Tsjuder was known for.
Evolution Through RevolutionEvolution Through Revolution by Brutal Truth
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.74
More Grindcore to look forward to in 2009. Samples are up if you would like a taste of what is to come with "Evolution Through Revolution"
Souls of DamnationSouls of Damnation by Blood Red Throne
Buy new: $20.99
Another Death Metal album for us to digest in 2009. Have not really paid close attention to these guys in the past but they seem to have a pretty decent rep when it comes to their music.
EngramEngram
Buy new: $9.49
Just in case you needed more Black Metal in your 2009 diet.
Walpurgis Rites: HexenwahnWalpurgis Rites: Hexenwahn by Belphegor
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.79
Blackened Death Metal elite. Not much of change from their 2008 release "Bondage Goat Zombie" but still what you would expect from the band.
Spewings from a Selfish NationSpewings from a Selfish Nation
Buy new: $8.99
Another side-project of Mick Kenney from Anaal Nathrakh. From the samples I listened to this band is basically a more Grindcore focused version of Anaal Nathrakh. The guitar tone sounded a bit too much like Anaal but I will keep my judgement to myself until I hear the entire album.
The Harvest FloorThe Harvest Floor
Buy new: $9.90
Grinding Death Metal is the name of the game for Cattle Decapitation. The tempo changes make this album a very intense listen. I do enjoy the dual vocal work the band uses. One is your typical grunting Death growl and the other is a very raspy, almost Black metal screech. Check it out!
Revelations of the Black Flame/Works of Fire Forces of HellRevelations of the Black Flame/Works of Fire Forces of Hell by 1349
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $14.65
From what I have heard this is supposed to be a change in direction for the band. It sounds like they have decided to venture into the realm of Dark Ambient which could be cool. We shall see!
Burden of GriefBurden of Grief by 11th Hour
Buy new: $13.99
Traditional Doom mix with a bit of Death Metal for seasoning.
Diabolical FiguresDiabolical Figures by Graveworm
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $8.58
The first album from Graveworm that I just don't care for. I understand that the symphonic elements are part of the band but this album just contains too much of it.
The Divinity of OceansThe Divinity of Oceans by Ahab
Buy new: $13.99
Funeral Doom just is not my thing I guess. I really tried to give this album a fair shot but the pace was just too dang slow. I love the vocals but nothing can fix my distaste for Funeral Doom.
World Suicide MachineWorld Suicide Machine by Skaldic Curse
Buy new: $22.98
Reminds me of Taake but with a more Progressive look at Black Metal. I have only listened to one track so far so I can't say much but what I can say is I am interested to see what the rest of the album sounds like.
Helvete: Det Iskalde MørketHelvete: Det Iskalde Mørket by Throne of Katarsis
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.66
You can never have too much Black Metal in your diet so here is yet another album to check out when it arrives. Their last album is a throw back to the roots of the genre so hopefully this one follows in its footsteps.
Spawning The NephilimSpawning The Nephilim by Lord Mantis
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $19.77
Chicago based Blackened Sludge. Their style is very unique and very entertaining. They have one track up on their Myspace page so anyone that is halfway interested in either Black Metal or Sludge should check it out.
The Hell PreacherThe Hell Preacher by Birds of Prey
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.26
New album from Death/Sludge outfit Birds of Prey. Not what I had hoped for but still not horrible. The album became very stale after the first few songs.
Static TensionsStatic Tensions by Kylesa
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.28
The Sludge/Doom genre has seen some great albums in the past couple of years. Last year we saw great albums from Lair Of The Minotaur and Bison B.C. and many more. Kylesa have created another example of how great this genre can be if done right. I still wish the vocals where a bit more torward the front of the mix but other than that they have put together a great album.
